Trabzonspor holds off Aris for narrow win

Trabzonspor Medical Park made its Eurocup a memorable one by defeating Aris Thessaloniki 74-71. Andrija Stipanovic scored 19 points and Dwight Hardy had 14, including 4 late free throws to help ice the win. Darius Johnson-Odom added 11 points and Tarence Kinsey posted 9 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Jerel McNeal led Aris with 15 points, Jamelle Hagins netted 14, Okaro White posted 12 points and 9 rebounds and Dominic Waters had 12 points and 8 assists in defeat. The game was close throughout. The hosts pulled away a bit in the second quarter to lead 37-31 at halftime and led by as many as 9 in the third, but Aris came back, led in the fourth and it came down till the final whistle.

After a scoreless opening minutes, Michalis Pelekanos broke the ice with a three-pointer for Aris. Stipanovic’s three-point play represented Trabzonspor first points. Stipanovic scored all 8 of the home side’s first points in giving Trabzonspor an 8-6 edge. Neither team led by more than one shot at any point in the first quarter, which ended at 17-16 after a Hardy layup for Trabzonspor. Serta Sanli’s three-point play boosted Trabzonspor, who soon scored again for a 6-point edge. Aris stayed close and a White three-pointer cut the difference to 26-25. Stipanovic’s three-point play and Johnson-Odom’s three-pointer made it 34-29. Kinsey’s put-back gave Trabzonspor a 37-31 halftime lead.

Stipanovic scored twice off tip-in early in the second half for a 41-34 Trabzonspor edge. Free throws by Hardy made it a 9-point game. Jake Cohen drew Aris back within 4 with a bucket, 2 free throws and a steal that led to a McNeal layup. Cohen got to the line twice more and McNeal scored twice as Aris zipped to within 50-49. Hardy protected the Trabzonspor lead with a triple and Hakan Demirel made it 55-49 at the end of the quarter. Aris came right back early in the fourth as Vasilis Xanthopoulos and Waters drew the visitors within 2. Then White reeled off 5 straight points to put Aris ahead 57-58. A triple by Kinsey put Trabzonspor on top again, but White tied things at 64-64 with three minutes remaining. Johnson-Odom scored twice to put the hosts in control, yet Hagins soon had Aris back within 1. Stipanovic scored a key basket with 30 seconds to go to make it 70-67 and Cohen missed a three at the other end. Free throws by Hardy iced the game down the stretch.

"First of all congratulations to the players. It wasn’t an easy game to play, especially after playing Galatasaray. I believe we controlled the game most of the game; we had problems when they put a 2-3 zone and we couldn’t adjust quickly. At the end the win is a win. We need to learn from the mistakes we made. Fur sure it was a big disadvantage to play without Novica [Velickovic] and the moment Kulig stepped in he made 2 early fouls and Berkay stepped in and carried this position for us, putting in a good performance. "

"It was a very tough game. We are very disappointed because we were very close to the win. We were bad on man-to-man defense and pick-and-roll reactions. In the second half, because of our zone defense, we created a different picture and created problems for our opponent. We scored some easy baskets and made some good steals. This built our confidence, which affected the game. We had to make some adjustments in the second half, which we failed and our opponent did well. We were also bad on free throws. For us the game is over and we need to focus on the next game in the Greek League."

"It was disappointing, we were very close. We played well. We made some crucial mistakes and they made some big shots and that’s how it goes. A few mistakes here and there and the outcome might have been different. This is the first Eurocup game and we have plenty of time to get better and if we are getting better tomorrow we are on the right way."
