Clyburn's late heroics lift CSKA past Bayern

CSKA Moscow edged FC Bayern Munich 77-74 in the Russian capital on Thursday to improve to 7-5 on the season. Will Clyburn led the winners with 17 points, Alexey Shved, Toko Shengelia and Johannes Voigtmann each scored 12 and Daniel Hackett had 10 for CSKA. Darrun Hilliard paced Bayern with 28 points and DeShaun Thomas added 17 for the guests. The loss dropped Bayern's record to 5-7. Clyburn struck twice from downtown in the final 2 minutes and added a layup and a dunk to lead CSKA to a hard-fought victory.

Iffe Lundberg got CSKA going with a three-pointer. Augustine Rubit downed a step-back jumper and Thomas struck from downtown in a 0-7 run that put Bayern ahead, 3-7. Shved followed a put-back layup with a triple but Rubit and Hilliard kept the visitors ahead, 8-12. Joel Bolomboy, a red-hot Hilliard, Shengelia and Corey Walden each hit three-pointers as the score reached 14-18. Shengelia dunked and Voigtmann scored down low to bring CSKA within 18-19. Walden and Thomas helped Bayern to an 18-24 lead after 10 minutes.

Marius Grigonis hit from beyond the arc early in the second quarter and Hackett added a driving layup, prompting the visitors to call timeout at 23-24. Hilliard answered from beyond the arc and Nick Weiler-Babb scored in penetration, giving Bayern fresh air at 23-29. Hilliard bettered Shved's layup with his fourth triple and soon added a floater to boost his team's lead to 27-34. Ognjen Jaramaz swished a jumper, but Shengelia and Shved brought CSKA within 31-37. Rubit allowed Bayern to boost its margin to 32-41 at halftime.

Thomas sank a corner triple that made it a double-digit game, 32-44, right after the break. Hackett stepped up with 5 unanswered points that gave the hosts hope at 37-45. Clyburn capped an 8-0 run with a corner triple. Lucic found his first points and Hilliard scored again but Clyburn, Hackett and Voigtmann got CSKA even closer, 48-49. Clyburn erased Jaramaz's driving layup that with a jumper and Nikita Kurbanov buried a three-pointer that completed CSKA's comeback, 53-51. Othello Hunter answered with an off-balance basket, igniting a 0-6 run in which Lucic had 4 points to give Bayern a 53-57 edge. Voigtmann struck from downtown, fixing the score at 56-57 after 30 minutes.

Hilliard buried a step-back triple early in the fourth quarter and Thomas improved on Shengelia's dunk with a shot from beyond the arc for a 58-64 Bayern lead. Shengelia scored around the basket and Shved hit a triple off the dribble, but Hilliard answered from beyond the arc for a 63-67 Bayern edge with less than 6 minutes left. Voigtmann and Bolomboy stepped up with consecutive tip-ins to tie the game, 67-67. Thomas scored in the low post, but Clyburn hit a three-pointer in transition for a 70-69 CSKA lead in the next-to-last minute. Thomas hit free throws and Hunter added a tip-in to restore a 70-73 Bayern edge with 1:05 remaining. Clyburn tied the game with another triple, but Hilliard gave the visitors a 73-74 lead with 37.8 seconds remaining. Clyburn scored in penetration and followed Lucic's miss from downtown with a dunk to seal the outcome.

Hilliard shines against his former team - again

The game between CSKA Moscow and FC Bayern Munich was very special for Darrun Hilliard and he showed it on the court. Hilliard played for CSKA in each of the last two seasons and it was his first visit to the Russian capital since leaving the club. He finished the game with 28 points on 6-of-10 three-point shooting plus 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 7 fouls drawn for a PIR of 30, which was close to his personal-best mark. Hilliard previously had a PIR of 32 with CSKA against another former team, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, on November 12, 2020.

CSKA protects its paint to win

CSKA Moscow managed to prevent FC Bayern Munich from scoring inside the arc and that allowed the Russian powerhouse to prevail in Round 12. CSKA held Bayern to just 10-of-28 shooting on two-point shots. Those 10 shots made inside the arc were close to its all-time low - Bayern scored 9 two-pointers against UNICS Kazan in Round 3 this season. Its percentage, 35.7%, was the fourth-worst in club history, too. CSKA matched a season-high with 6 blocks, pulled down 14 offensive rebounds and collected 5 steals. Its hustle paid off with a hard-fought victory.

Clyburn reaches 2,000-point mark

Will Clyburn of CSKA Moscow reached a new milestone in his Turkish Airlines EuroLeague career by reaching the 2,000-point mark in his team's Round 12 showdown against FC Bayern Munich. Clyburn achieved the milestone with a mid-range jumper with 2:38 left in the third quarter. He became the third player on CSKA's current roster with at least 2,000 points. Alexey Shved ranks ninth on the all-time scoring list with 2,863 points and Toko Shengelia is 32nd overall with 2,302. Only Anadolu Efes Istanbul has more active members of the 2,000-point club on its roster - Krunoslav Simon, Shane Larkin, Vasilije Micic, Tibor Pleiss and Bryant Dunston.

"Congratulations to our team, congratulations to the guys. They deserve all the praises. Congratulations to Bayern, of course, this is EuroLeague, a tough game, it leaves a good feeling coming back from -13, if I am not mistaken, still believing, having faith that we have to play defense in the game - definitely not the way that we were playing in the first half. We talked in the locker room. We talked a lot. The guys kept believing even though we opened the third quarter and it happened pretty much the same. In the game that we played against Maccabi over here, they opened the third quarter with a three-pointer, actually, it was 0-6 if I am not mistaken. But we kept believing and I think that one of the turning points - basketball is about runs - is when Dani Hackett forced a turnover and drew the unsportsmanlike foul. We realized that this is a way we had to play, being a little more physical - the way that we are playing, actually. They were playing physical, the only difference over there were the free throws. We are a physical team that plays a lot on the block, driving a lot but still, we couldn't go that easy. We kept believing and needed to match their physicality, match their aggressivity. We picked up and changed completely the mindset and the way we had to play in the second half. This is what gave us the win together, of course, with a lot of big shots of Will [Clyburn], Alex [Shved], JoJo [Johannes Voigtmann] - I mean, I can mention the whole team, so congratulations to them. We need to realize there is nothing granted out there. Everybody need to realize that: you are not going in because of your past. You are not winning games because of our past or because someone is going to give it to you. You have to go and earn it on the court. That is the way, that is the mindset we need to have."

"It is a painful loss because I believe we built the opportunity to win the game. Congratulations to CSKA. We controlled the game well with our defense and we had little problems in the third quarter when they started pressing. We were not aggressive enough and lost a little bit of rhythm but then, in the end, we built the opportunity for a great win on the road and then some individual plays of Clyburn made the difference. And we missed 4 layups in the last 2 minutes, or 2 minutes and a half, that cost us the game."

"Of course, we showed a lot of character out there. We kept fighting. Even when we went down, we kept fighting, we kept believing, and I am glad we got the win."

"It is tough, but I just loved it. When our back was against the wall, the dark side that we showed of our team, especially in our home court... we should send a message from the beginning. We cannot have the same first half that we had today. We have to send a message to whoever comes here that it is not going to be an easy game, 40 minutes, they have to fight their asses off to have a chance to win. But I am really proud of my coaching staff, of my teammates and of the club. We really showed the face that we want to have all season. We really showed it in the second half. Obviously, they are a very good team. They have balanced, great players inside and outside. They have been playing many years together and we knew it was not going to be easy, but what we have to do is focus more on ourselves and figure it out, what is our strength, what is our weakness, work on our weaknesses and make our strengths even stronger."
