ALBA rallies to stun Rytas, qualify for Top 16

Elmedin Kikanovic scored 29 points and ALBA Berlin used a late run to stun Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius 97-99 on the road and punch its Top 16 ticket on Wednesday. With the win, ALBA improved to 4-4 and swept the series against Rytas, which suffered its first home loss of the season and dropped to 3-4 in Group B. Rytas still has chances to qualify for the next stage. Dragan Milosavljevic had 19 points, Malcolm Miller scored 15 and Peyton Siva added 12 in victory. David Logan and Rokas Giedraitis had 16 apiece, Deividas Gailius netted 14, while Drew Gordon collected 12 points and 10 rebounds for Rytas, which hit 15 of 25 three-point shots on the night, but still fell short of victory.

Logan and Rashuan Broadus got Rytas off to a good start, scoring all but 2 points on the way to an early 14-9 lead. A triple from Josh Akognon opened a 24-16 advantage, but Milosavljevic and Kikanovic quickly fueled a 1-10 run that got the visitors in front. Rytas led 27-26 at the end of first quarter, and the teams continued trading blows in the second. Neither team built a significant lead until Adam Lapeta and Arturas Jomantas scored inside and Giedraitis from outside to make it 50-40. The hosts led 54-47 at halftime. Kikanovic and Milosavljevic kept ALBA in range, but Gordon and third three from Giedraitis opened a 70-62 cushion for Rytas. But Siva had a three-point play and Niels Giffey a put-back late in the third to make it 72-67, before Kikanovic strung together 6 points and cut the deficit to 74-73 early in the fourth. Rytas remained in front, and a Gailius three-pointer made it 81-77, but Kikanovic sparked a 0-10 run, capped by consecutive triples from Siva and Miller. Gailius and Giedraitis hit back-to-back threes to give Rytas hope, but Siva hit another one from downtown to seal the deal with 40 seconds to go.

"I would like to congratulate ALBA for the victory and the good game. Tonight offense totally dominated against defense. We were able to score, but at the same time we couldn’t play strong defense. It looks strange when you shoot behind the arc with 60 percent accuracy, but anyway you lose. We lack a cool mind, concentration and strength in the crucial moments of this game, made too many mistakes in the second half after we lost the ball only twice in the first half. It looked like my players stepped on the court not enough concentrated and I’m responsible for the such an attitude in this extremely important game for us."

"We lost our last two games in a very bad way. Against Bilbao we played well 30 minutes, but the last 10 minutes we couldn’t control the game. On the road against Khimki was again the same story: 34 minutes we played really good, but during the last six minutes we couldn’t keep it. Tonight we started bad for 6 minutes, but after that we played good defense, especially at the beginning of the third quarter. My team reacted well and we played all 40 minutes tonight to win the game. This victory is very important for the rest of the season. I’m happy as a coach; we continue in the EuroCup [Top 16] and will present our game in a better way."
