Strong fourth quarter carries Madrid past Panathinaikos

Real Madrid used a fourth-quarter run to pull away for an 89-68 home victory over Panathinaikos OPAP Athens for its third straight win. Fabien Causeur led the way for Madrid with 14 points while Facundo Campazzo had 13 points and 5 assists, Walter Tavares 11 points and 7 rebounds and Gustavo Ayon 8 points and 9 rebounds. The win pushed Madrid’s record to 11-2 overall and 7-1 at home. Panathinaikos fell to 6-7 with its fourth loss in the last five games and a 1-5 record away from home. Keith Langford scored 20 points in a losing effort while Nick Calathes collected 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Calathes opened the scoring, but Panathinaikos could not get anything going after that. Madrid had Causeur knocking down a pair of three-pointers in scoring 8 points in a 16-0 run to go up 16-2. Ian Vougioukas snapped Panathinaikos's five-and-a-half minute scoreless drought and Calathes's next basket made it 18-8, but Panathinaikos was getting burned on the glass as Madrid already had 4 offensive rebounds for a 21-10 lead, which was 23-10 after 10 minutes. The Madrid onslaught continued in the second quarter with a 9-2 start, featuring a Jeffery Taylor three-pointer for a 32-12 lead. Taylor added two more scores and it was 38-18 when Nikos Pappas finally hit Panathinaikos's first three-pointer after the guests missed their first 7 attempts from behind the arc. Langford followed from long range and the deficit was 38-24. Langford added another three to pull within 40-29, but Campazzo punched right back with a triple and the hosts led 43-31 at the break. Georgios Papagiannis opened the second half and cut the margin to 10 points, but Anthony Randolph and Sergio Llull hit from outside in a 10-2 surge and Madrid led 53-35. Papagiannis and Langford combined for 8 points in a 2-14 Panathinaikos run to trim the gap to 59-53. Llull and Campazzo hit for the hosts, who were up 63-55 after 30 minutes. Calathes's three to start the fourth quarter made it 63-58, but Jaycee Carroll hit at the other end and then Madrid scored 4 points on an unsportsmanlike foul by Calathes with Trey Thompkins's free throws making it 71-58. The hosts put the game to bed with a 13-0 run with 4 points from Tavares, who added a three-point play for an 89-63 lead with 2 minutes left.

Panathinaikos was still hanging around - down just 5 points early in the fourth quarter, but Real Madrid scored the next 8 points to pull away and then finished the game for good with a 13-0 run later in the quarter.

Gustavo Ayon was one of six Madrid players with 8 points or more as he tallied 8 points, but also collected a team-high 9 rebounds along with 5 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks - all in 23 minutes of action.

"I want to congratulate the team for the win. I think we worked well on many aspects from the beginning, hence the difference in the score. I think we had too many turnovers that could let them stay in the game. We know we'll play five games in 10 days, and I think the team showed focus form the very beginning. The difference in rebounds was the key because it allowed us to have the tempo of the game. Then in offense we moved the ball well, despite the turnovers we had 22 assists. I am happy with the win."

"Real Madrid was clearly superior tonight. We kept fighting to get into the game, we played better defense and offense and we stayed in the game until the end of the third quarter. Starting with the unsportsmanlike foul, Campazzo's free throws and then an offensive rebound, Madrid took a decisive advantage. The game broke open and we tried to fight until the end but Madrid was superior. The trend of the game was that we did not do well on rebounds and starting from there, we could not play."
