Cook sets assists record in Buducnost win

Omar Cook set a new Eurocup single-game record with 16 assists to lead Buducnost VOLI Podgorica to an 87-69 victory over Ventspils of Latvia in Group F on Wednesday. Buducnost improved its chances of reaching the Last 32 by tying Ventspils for fourth place with a 2-4 record. An 11-0 run late in the third quarter, fueled by Cook and Cedomir Vitkovac gave a 70-56 margin to Buducnost, which never looked back. Cook also scored 15 points for the winners, while Cedomir Vitkovac added 13, Vladimir Dasic 12, Suad Sehovic and Bojan Subotic netted 11 each and Wiliam Sheehey 10. Maris Gulbis scored 14 and Arits Ate 12 for Ventspils.

A 0-8 run for the visitors capped by Artis Ate from mid-range gave them a 5-13 lead, but Subotic and Vitkovac fueled the hosts’ comeback to within 15-16. Veteran Mire Chatman kept Ventspils in front from the foul line and Vitkovac in the paint scored to make it final 17-18 at the end of the first quarter. Gulbis from downtown tied it at 23-23 for the guests and he then put his side in front by scoring 3 free throws, 27-28. Dasic completed a three-point-play to put again Buducnost in front, then Aleksa Popovic from long distance and a jumper drilled by Sheehey raised the margin to 44-37. Harvey Grant and Ate reduced the difference to 46-41 at halftime.

Akselis Vairogs from downtown made it a 2-point game, before the teams exchanged baskets, but Ventspils never took the lead and Cook, by scoring 7 consecutive points with two mid-range jumpers and a three-pointer, gave a 64-56 advantage to the hosts. Vitkovac completed an 11-0 run to go up 70-56. Then Vairogs with a second left in the quarter fixed a 70-59 score to keep Ventspils alive. Vairgos got the visitors within 70-62, but the hosts were unstoppable and a dunk from Sheehey to make it 83-67 sealed the win.

"First of all, congratulations to my players on this phenomenal victory; we managed to beat a good team by nearly 20 points. The final difference is not real, it was very difficult. Only teams that have great mental strength can hold the lead when the opponent has a faultless three-point shot. Most teams in such situations fall. We were forced to play with a short lineup, most of the second half played Vitkovac and Dasic played together. I think we deserved to win. "
STELMAHERS, ROBERTS
Ventspils
"Buducnost is good team, and they show quality on the court. The key man was Omar Cook, with 16 asissts It was a great game. He saw all the small details in our defense. We knew he could do that, but he scored 15 points, which is not usual for Cook. Buducnost had a good day and we couldn’t survive on the road. All the other Buducnost players helped Omar. We did not play smart, we made some stupid solutions, especially in the counter attack. "
