Efes Pilsen edged Panathinaikos 79-78

In arguably one of the best Turkish Airlines Euroleague games so far this season, Efes Pilsen sealed its ticket to the Top 16 by edging Panathinaikos 79-78 in front of 13,800 fans in Istanbul on Wednesday. This results prevents CSKA from reaching the Top 16 after eight consecutive seasons reaching the Euroleague Final Four. Efes Pilsen Istanbul
“First of all, it was a very important game for us. We had a very important win to book a place in the Top 16. And I’m sure my team will be much more competitive in the next stage. It was a very tough and hard game which we have been expecting before the start. We played against one of the few best teams in Europe. We had a good start and played the best 20 minutes of the season in the first half. But when it comes to defend it, we failed in the second half. Panathinaikos created a lot of points with penetrations especially in the third quarter and broke he balance of our defense. When they came closer, we were in panic. We couldn’t answer the same way to their quick game. But I’m happy that we were there again when it came to fight back to win. We challenged very well in the critical moments and managed to win. I dedicate this win to our excellent fans which supported us from the beginning until the end.”
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos Athens
“My impression of the game was really different than any other game. Efes Pilsen had a great first half and created a big difference which seems like extraordinary for a kind of game like this. In the second half we changed the game. We played much better. We also had the chance of winning the game. The last thing I said before the last offense of Efes to my players is that we might win the game. Anyway, congratulations to Efes Pilsen for their victory. It was a real important one for them for reaching the Top 16.”

TUNCERI, KEREM
Efes Pilsen Istanbul
“It was a very tough game for us. If we lost, we could have big trouble in qualifying to the Top 16. We were motivated in the first half and did everything better than our opponent Panathinaikos. We had a great difference but we failed to defend it in the second half. Panathinaikos managed to come back in the third period by using our lack of defense. But anyway, we played the last minutes very smart. Personally, I always try to give everything I have for my team, every time. I’m glad to be a part of this very important win. God is helping me in those critical seconds. But we have to work on our defensive mistakes for the good of our position in the Top 16.”
TSARTSARIS, KOSTAS
Panathinaikos Athens
“We were really bad in the first quarter. We allowed Efes Pilsen to have a big margin in the game easily. Nothing changed in the second period but we came back like the way we should have come in the third period. We played better in the third period to balance the score and had a small advantage at the beginning of the last period. Then the game turned to a big fight to win. One shot for us, one shot for them. Efes were lucky tonight to win the game. We were looking for the next game to win to finish on top of the group.”
