Crvena Zvezda kept up its fight for the top in Group D by blowing away last-place visitor Dexia Mons 96-69 at home in Belgrade, Serbia on Tuesday. After a game-opening basket by Mons, Crvena Zvezda had no trouble in raising its record to 6-3 to joine a four-way tie for first place in Group D. All four of those teams - Crvena Zvezda, Real Madrid, Unics and PAOK - are alread qualified for the elimination rounds. Crvena Zvezda used runs of 18-1 and 14-2 to win the first quarter 32-11 and never look back. Milan Gurovic again led the winners with 29 points, while four of his teammates also scored in double figures: Vuk Radijojevic 13 points, Tadija Dragicevic 12, Petar Popovic 11 and Nenad Misanovic 10. Mons got a monster game from Yemi Nicholson, who poured in 30 points to go with 16 from Kevin Houston. The game was played with only game officials and journalists in Pionir Arena because of a two-game closed-door sanction levied against Crvena Zvezda for fan behavior in a previous home game.

When George Evans scored for an early 0-2 Mons lead, nobody believed it would last for a long time - and it didn't. Crvena Zvezda tied quickly on a Nenad Misanovic layup that began what proved to be a game-deciding run of 18-1 in which Gurovic scored on a layup, a dunk and a three-pointer. He was joined by Pero Antic, who fired a bomb from downtown and scored a jumper as Crvena Zvezda led 18-3 in empty Pionir Arena due to its two-game penalty for fan behavior at a previous game. The hosts' run was stopped only when Houston scored but that was only provided a pause before another Crvena Zvezda blast of 14-2 run as the hosts led 32-11 at the end of first quarter. Nicholson of Mons opened the second quarter with a layup and traded baskets with Crvena Zvezda center Popovic over the next few minutes. Nicholson was keeping guests alive at that point, as he scored 14 straight points, although he was all alone for Mons. Nonetheless, Nicholson managed to cut the margin to 45-30 before Gurovic answered with 4 points in a row and the score was 49-30 after 20 minutes. Gurovic had 19 points already.

Houston's triple for Mons to start the second half was met with 6 points in a row by Crvena Zvezda center Misanovic answered with 6 straight points. Houston and Nicholson were the only players ready to compete for Mons against the hosts. They combined for a 0-6 run to cut the deficit to 14 points in minute 25. But Tadija Dragicedvic and Popovic were ready to answer, then Radivojevic fired a bomb in the final seconds of third period and Crvena Zvezda had a comfortable 73-54 lead after 30 minutes. Radivojevic gave his team a 20-point lead when he scored to start the final period. and another 9-0 run as Mons. Until the end the teams were trading baskets as Gurovic went off with 29 points scored. He was outscored in the last minute of the game when Nicholson netted his 30th point but Crvena Zvezda had what it wanted and more with a 96-69 victory.

Head Coaches

SAKOTA, DRAGAN
Crvena Zvezda
“Without any doubt we deserved that win. We are a better team than Dexia, which was not so much interested in playing tonight because they lost all chances to reach the second phase in the ULEB Cup. The key was the beginning of the game when our players had the desire to beat the opponent. I am satisfied with the contribution of the players from our bench and that is the fact that makes me happy.”
BAVCEVIC, NIKSA
Dexia Mons

“I cannot be satisfied. We entered the game sleepy and we lost the game in the first period. Our key players, George Evans and Bingo Merriex, were out of shape tonight.”

Players

DRAGICEVIC, TADIJA
Crvena Zvezda
“A very important win for us because we are close to reaching third place in our group. We studied Dexia well and with aggressive defense, we managed to stop their most dangerous shooters. It was so strange to play in an empty arena without our supporters.”
