Unics Kazan dominated Asseco Prokom 68-41
Top 16 qualifier Unics didn't have any problems to blast Asseco Prokom at home on Thursday afternoon by 68-41. The defense of the hosts beat a record in the process as it kept Prokom to 11 points in the first half. The win allows already-qualified Unics to improve its record to 6-3 in Group D while Asseco Prokom who was eliminated before this game, drops to 1-8. Henry Domercant led the way for the winners with 18 points, Terrell Lyday added 12 and Kelly McCarty posted 10. For Prokom, only Jerel Blassingame scored in double digits with his 10 points.
Unics started strong with Petr Samoylenko aggressively attacking the basket of the guests, but Adam Lapeta slammed the ball to tie for Asseco Prokom.
However, the hosts started getting their act together and soon Mike Wilkinson and Terrell Lyday teamed up to make it 7-2 for Unics. The defense of the hosts
was kepping the offense of Prokom down and Henry Domercant blasted a new three for 12-6. Unics was also dominating the rebounds battle at 11-4 at this point
and the guests were stuck at 3 of 12 two-point shots. Finally, Lyday closed the first period with a new triple for a 19-6 after 10 minutes and a 10-0 burst.
The second quarter was an extension of the last minutes of the first one. Unics was keeping the Prokom defense totally blacked out while the hosts kept on
adding points. Oliver Lafayette scored one free throw for the guests and the 21-7 but the hosts kept on working and soon, Kelly McCarty points made it 29-7.
Donatas Motiejunas and Przemyslaw Zamojski managed to chain two straight baskets for the guests for the 30-11 but McCarty was back on track with four more
points of his own to close the first half at 35-11, Prokom's points being the lowest ever by a team in one half in a Euroleague regular season game,
the previous mark being 14 points by KRKA Novo Mesto against CSKA Moscow in November of 2003.
Things looked a little better for Asseco Prokom starting the second half as Adam Hrycaniuk was soring a few buckets for the guests, but the difference was too big already and, on the other side, Unics was not slowing down either so as Domercant and Lyday teamed up to blast more threes, the score was up to 50-21 again forcing a new Prokom timeout. The hosts were at 6 of 7 threes at this point while Prokom was 1 of 15 and the rebounds battle was still lopsided in favor of the hosts. The lead of Unics soared to the 30 points when Samoylenko added points for the 54-24 but the guests had the last word in the third period with a Lukasz Seweryn three to make it 54-27.
In the last period, the story didn't change. Unics started with a 10-0 burst while Prokom onl found its first points in minute 5 of the quarter for 64-26 after Jerel Blassingame's bucket. Motiejunas soon added a three to that allowed the guests to improve their image a little. Unics never stopped working but when Blassingame hit two free throws for 66-37 even the hosts slowed down a little as the clock ticked away for the final buzzer.
