O'Neale leads Gran Canaria past Skopje

Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas finished the 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season in style by downing MZT Skopje Aerodrom 87-75 at home on Wednesday. Gran Canaria finished Group A in first place with a 7-1 record while Skopje registering its eighth loss in as many games and bowed out of the competition. Royce O'Neale led the winners with 23 points on 8-of-9 two-point shooting. Bo McCalebb and Oriol Pauli each had 12 points, while Albert Oliver dished 8 assists for Gran Canaria. Jure Lalic led Skopje with 15 points, Djordje Drenovac added 13, Marko Simonovski 12 and Ljubomir Mladenovski 11 in defeat. Despite missing all 4 of its free throw attempts, Gran Canaria made 17 of 21 two-pointers (81%), dished 14 assists and forced Skopje to 10 turnovers to get a 46-40 halftime lead. Gran Canaria finished with a EuroCup season-high 76.2% on two-point shots (32-of-42) and 24 assists to just 13 turnovers. Gran Canaria now joins Top 16 Group E along with Montakit Fuenlabrada, UCAM Murcia and former EuroCup champion Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar.

Daniel Clark hit a triple and a couple of baskets by Drenovac gave Skopje an early 8-9 lead. A three-pointer by Pauli sparked a 7-0 run highlighted by Anzejs Pasecniks's alley-oop slam. Drenovac and Clark kept pushing Skopje, but O'Neale took over with a dunk, a layup and a three-pointer. Xavi Rabaseda also struck from downtown to make it a double-digit lead, 29-17, after 10 minutes. O'Neale stayed unstoppable early in the second quarter and a triple by Kyle Kuric broke the game open at 40-24. Skopje found a new go-to guy in Mladenovski, who brought the guests a bit closer, 42-32. Clark hit another one from beyond the arc and got help from Mladenovski and Simonovski to bring Skopje within 46-40 at halftime. McCalebb took over after the break and got help from Richard Hendrix and Pauli to restore a 56-42 Gran Canaria lead. Lalic stepped up with consecutive baskets, but an eight-meter bomb by Pauli and back-to-back baskets by Eulis Baez made it a 16-point game. Simonovski and Charlon Kloof led a 0-7 run that brought Skopje within 65-56. Kuric and O'Neale helped Gran Canaria restore a 72-58 lead after 30 minutes. Skopje only managed to trade baskets for a while, as an alley-oop slam by Ryan Hollins kept the hosts way ahead, 78-64, with over six minutes left. Nothing changed after that, as Gran Canaria kept a safe margin all the way until the final buzzer.

"In the beginning of each quarter, we were good on defense and playing with intensity. We have had low accuracy on three-pointers and free throws. Everything else was satistfactory, not only thinking of this game, but of our final standing in the group, where we went 7-1, and together with Valencia, the only team to do that."
