Strasbourg took care of business on Tuesday night with an 80-88 road win over Besiktas Cola Turka that saw the club climb to third place in Group B at the end of the regular season. Strasbourg needed to win and for Snaidero Udine to lose its game at FMP in order to leapfrog the Italian side for third place in the group and that's exactly what happened. Claude Marquis scored 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting as Strasbourg improved to 5-5, overtaking Snaidero on a tiebreaker. Besiktas dropped to 2-8 and finished the regular season in last place in the group. The game was close for much of he first half until Marquis shined in a 0-10 run that gave the visitors the lead for good. Strasbourg increased its advantage to 16 in the third period and cruised from that point until Donnel Harvey carried Besiktas back in the fourth. Harvey scored 5 points during a 7-0 spurt as the hosts closed the gap to 72-78, however Strasbourg was ready and made its free throws down the stretch to earn the win. Afik Nissim added 14 for Strasbourg, Chuck Eidson had 13 points and 5 assists, Aerick Sanders scored 12 and Michael Smith 10. Harvey led Besiktas with 27, Aubrey Reese had 19 points, but also 8 turnovers and Ivan McFarlin added 16.

Reese put Besiktas on the board first, but Lonnie Cooper answered for Strasbourg's first points on the next possession. A fast-paced game ensued as the teams traded baskets and neither took more than a possession's worth points. Smith's triple put the visitors up 10-13 and Marquis soon helped Strasbourg to a 12-18 advantage. Reese's three brought Besiktas within 3 and a Jamel Thomas score kept it at 19-22 after 10 minutes. Nissim sparked Strasbourg early in the second period, but Levent Bilgin kept Besiktas close and McFarlin soon put the hosts up 30-29. However Strasbourg was just getting started. Marquis scored half the points during a 0-10 run for a 32-39 lead late in the half. Even after a Reese basket, Eidson and Nissim added three points each to help the visitors take a 34-47 halftime lead.

Thomas and Harvey looked to spark Besiktas at the start of the second half, but back-to-back threes from Smith and Nissim kept Strasbourg comfortably ahead. Sanders put his team up 16 midway through the third period and the best efforts of Reese and Harvey couldn't get Besiktas closer than 57-71 at the end of the third period. McFarlin cut the gap to 10 early in the fourth quarter, but baskets from John McCord and Gauthier Darrigand answered for Strasbourg. Harvey came through with 5 points during a 7-0 spurt as Besiktas threatened and closed within 72-78, but free throws by Sanya Giffa and Nissim restored a 10-point lead and the visitors held on for the win.

Head Coaches

DIDIN, MURAT
Besiktas Istanbul
"We have had a very unlucky season in the ULEB Cup. It's because of our two injured players, who weren't able to play for most of the season. We felt the absence of Baris Ozcan and Jamel Thomas in the big games and were not able to fill their places. In these kinds of strong competitions, you cannot challenge the opponents if you are missing your stars. Tonight, we didn't get good support from our Turkish players on the court. I'm happy about the performance of the American guys, but we have to improve our game with the addition of Turkish guys. I hope we do better in the next years and wish good lucks to Strasbourg SIG."
GIRARD, ERIC
Strasbourg
"We are really very happy to win in Istanbul and to finish in third position in the group. This is our second away win this season. Now we will wait for the draw. For us, the main thing was to qualify to the second round. Besiktas Cola Turka challenged very well in the game, but we had a good percentage, especially behind the line."

Players

VEKILOGLU, ARDA
Besiktas Istanbul
"I have to confess that we were not good tonight. We had a lot of turnovers and that was the main reason for us losing. They were stronger both inside and outside and controlled most of the game. We weren't able to close the gap in the last quarter and it's really sad to finish the season this way."
NISSIM, AFIK
Strasbourg
"I think that both teams made a lot of mistakes during the game and the number of the turnovers shows that very well. We didn't play well on defense, but the effort on offense helped us win the game. Now we are feeling satisfied for the first round, but things are going to get tougher in the next stage. So we have to play much better in the second round."
