2012-13Last 16Round 2
January 16, 2013 CET: 16:00
Local time: 19:00 BASKET HALL KAZAN
A solid game throughout the first three quarters and cold blood in the last were all thet ratiopharm Ulm needed to pull a valuable road win at Unics Kazan on Wednesday by 87-95. The lead changed hands a few times even though Ulm was dominating for most of the game and in the last 3:30 minutes, the guests soared to a 18 of 20 from the charity stripe that allowed them to stay safe despite Chuck Eidson's late attempts to save Unics. The win allows Ulm to improve its record to 1-1 in Group L, while Unics collects its first Last 16 loss to drop to 1-1. Allan Ray led the winners with 20 points, Per Guenther contributed 19, John Bryant added 18 plus 13 boards and Keaton Nankivil had 14. For Unics, Eidson was too lonely with his 31 points and 10 rebounds. Only Terrell Lyday joined him in double digits with 10 points.

Ratiopharm Ulm started with the upper hand despite Unics Kazan inaugurating the score with a basket by Ian Vougioukas. The guests were soon up to 2-5 and despite some lead changes, Allan Ray and John Bryant pushed them again to a 11-16 Ulm edge. Terrell Lyday and Chuck Eidson were trying to put Unics back in the game but Keaton Nankivil was keeping Ulm ahead with his second three in one quarter, for 19-24. Eidson had the time to hit a layup before the first period buzzer to make it 21-24 after 10 minutes. Lance Jeter opened the second quarter with a three for Ulm, and Vladimir Veremeenko soon joined Eidson in scoring for Unics making it a 30-30 tie after the latter's triple. When Kostas Kaimakoglou nailed another three, Unics was ahead again, 33-32, as Bryant was up to his 10th point in his lonely crusade to keep Ulm in the loop. The guests were controlling the ball with only 3 turnovers at that point, but Unics' cold head from the stripe was keeping things tight. Ray was up to some personal action in the final moments of the first half but Vougioukas had teh last say with a free throw to tie 46-46 after 20 minutes.

The third period started with Ulm playing great defense and keeping Unics' points at minimum. When Ray hit a new jumper it made it a 2-9 run for the guests to put the 48-55 on the scoreboard, forcing Unics' timeout. The scoring burst went up to 2-12 but, as expected, Unics reacted. Six straight points by Eidson started up a Unics comeback that Nikita Shabalkin capped for the 59-60. Jeter hit the three to try to keep Ulm ahead, 59-63 after 30. The first minutes of the fourth quarter also started with maximum balance. However, Ulm managed to squeeze in a 0-6 burst capped by Daniel Theis' slam to make it 67-74 with less than 5 minutes to go. Shabalkin saved Unics for the time being, but Theis and Per Guenther appeared in the last moments to boost Ulm to a 71-82 lead with less than 2 minutes to go. Eidson also replied with free throws for Unics, but Bryant did the same for Ulm entering the last minute of the game. Eidson blasted back to back threes including a steal by him in a last attempt to win the game for Unics, 81-86 with 42 seconds to go and Ulm's timeout. Guenther was keeping his head cold from the line making his two attempts for 81-88 and another Unics timeout. Eidson missed his three this time, and as the clock was ticking away, Ulm kept cold in the line making it impossible for Unics to catch them.

"It was pretty distressing to lose at home like this, especially after having such a good start to the Last 16 in Istanbul. I can’t explain this defeat with the tiredness of my players, since we had had at least three days in Kazan. We needed to beat Ratiopharm at home and, unfortunately, we lost. Even at the start of the game we could see that the players didn’t show their best. I’m very distressed now. We knew who we would play. Statistics say that the team has averaged 95 points in its last two games. We have also conceded 95 points today. They shot fast and managed to 7 three-pointers in the first half. There was neither energy nor concentration in the way we played. Now we have to draw conclusions and learn the lesson. We will have to work hard to improve our game. "

"First, I would like to congratulate my players for the win. We played against one of the strongest teams in this competition, and we are pretty pleased to win on the road. We played Unics in the Euroleague Qualification Round in Italy, and if you compare these two games you will see the development of our team. We have great respect for our opponents, though I believe we deserved this win. We shot stronger, we were faster than Unics, and we had John Bryant inside. Unics had to pay much attention to him, which created some space for us to make three-point shots."
