Zenit clinches first place in Group C by beating Unicaja

Zenit St. Petersburg clinched first place in Group C by beating Unicaja Malaga 82-72 at Yubileyni Arena behind a masterful performance by Janis Timma. The forward shined with a career-high 33 points plus 10 rebounds to lead Zenit, which concluded the regular season with a 6-2 record. Unicaja placed third at 4-4. Unicaja led by 10 midway through the third quarter before the hosts stormed back with an 11-0 run. Unicaja also held a slim lead in the fourth quarter, but Timma and co. proved to be too much to handle. Zenit outrebounded Unicaja 41-28, including 16 offensive boards. Aaron White added 12 points and 8 rebounds and Ryan Toolson also scored 12 for Zenit. Jamar Smith paced Unicaja with 19 points, Dejan Musli scored 12 and Jeff Brooks and Kyle Fogg had 10 each.

Zenit started strong by scoring the game’s first 5 points and taking a 9-2 lead through Evgeny Valiev. The difference reached 8 on an Artem Vikhrov triple, but smith netted 4 points on a 0-9 Unicaja run as the visitors moved in front for the first time, 14-15. After a pair of baskets for each side, the first quarter ended at 18-19. The teams traded baskets early in the second quarter and the score was tied on three occasions before Smith heated up with a pair of threes plus a free throw in a 2-11 run that gave Unicaja a 29-38 advantage. Brooks added two more baskets in taking the lead to 13 before Timma’s triple made it 34-44 at the break. It was still a 10-point game four minutes into the second half, but then Zenit shot down Unicaja on defense and back-to-back triple by Timma and Toolson sparked an 11-0 push that gave the hosts the lead. The team entered the fourth quarter tied at 53-53. Timma’s sixth three of the game put the hosts up 59-55 early in the fourth, but Fogg got going for Unicaja and pushed his side in front 60-61. Timma scored twice and Vikhrov nailed a three to put Zenit back in control at 69-63 with two and a half minutes remaining. And another three by Timma all but iced the game in the final minute.

Head Coaches

KARASEV, VASILY
Zenit St Petersburg
"That was a victory contrary to all the problems we had with our roster. We had two players from our backcourt absent with only Vikhrov and Toolson left. Some players changed their positions in this game and that's why there were a lot of misunderstandings and mistakes, but a win is a win."
PLAZA, JOAN
Unicaja Malaga
"Our players thought that the game was already won too early. We stopped playing like a team in the second half. We let Zenit believe that they can win and they did. We made 19 turnovers and it was just because we believed that the victory was in the bag too early."
