Proximus Spirou Charleroi takes first road win at Ulm

Proximus Spirou Charleroi edged ratiopharm Ulm 76-77 for its second straight victory and first road win of the season. The result gave Spirou a 2-5 record in Group C and dropped Ulm to 3-4. Ulm, however, kept the potential tiebreaker between them because it won their Round 2 clash in Belgium by 6. Billy Baron enjoyed a monster night for the winners with 31 points and 6 assists, while his brother Jimmy Baron scored 15 and Sacha Massot had 10. Augustine Rubit shined in defeat with 28 points and 11 rebounds for Ulm, which made only 3 of 20 three-pointers (15%). DeAndre Kane added 12 points and Taylor Braun 10.

Rubit scored on Ulm’s first possession and Taylor Braun soon added a three-pointer, but a pair of shots from Billy Baron had Spirou right back in it. A pair of Billy Baron threes gave him 10 points and gave Spirou a 9-12 lead midway through the opening quarter. Ulm scored the next 6 points, including Chris Babb’s first Eurocup points with free throws, but Jimmy Baron connected from downtown to tie it at 15-15. A series of free throws at both ends capped by 2 from DeAndre Kane gave Ulm a 21-19 lead after 10 minutes. The Baron brothers generated offense for Spirou, but Ulm answered to keep things tied. David Brembly’s put-back gave the hosts a 30-26 advantage, but a four-point play from Jimmy Baron turned things around. Massot’s basket and Billy Baron’s fourth three gave the visitors a 36-44 halftime lead.

Rubit scored 6 points in a 9-0 run to start the second half that put Ulm ahead. Pavel Pumprla heated up and got some help from Billy Baron in carrying Spirou back to a 49-54 advantage. Raymar Morgan helped Ulm climb within 2, but a Billy Baron triple ended the third quarter at 54-59. Per Guenther sank 3 free throws and Kane’s steal and layup tied the game. It was tied twice more before Kane’s put-back made it 65-63 with five minutes remaining. The lead changed hands again as Alexandre Libert’s three put Spirou ahead and Kane got the hosts up 69-68 with three-plus minutes left. Massot’s free throws lifted Spirou ahead and Billy Baron made it 71-74 with 18 seconds left. The finish was mostly a free-throw contest until DaSean Butler missed a three to tie it for Ulm and Billy Baron iced the win from the line.

Head Coaches

LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
"I have to give a lot of credit to the whole team of Charleroi. Obviously, Billy Baron had an outstanding game with 31 points, but the whole team contributed to this win. I agree that the zone defense bothered us a lot and we didn’t shoot the ball well tonight. But we only played three quarters of good defense. With four quarters of strong defense, I’m sure we could have won this game even with only making 3 out of 20 threes."
STAS, JACQUES
Proximus Spirou Charleroi
"We knew that it would be a tough game on the road. But the guys wanted to play hard. We wanted to show a reaction after Ulm’s overtime win at Charleroi and it worked out: Our team showed a great game with good defensive effort. Ulm shot really bad tonight and if you know this, you stay in your zone defense."

Players

RUBIT, AUGUSTINE
ratiopharm Ulm
"It is really tough to lose a game like that. And it wasn`t the first game this year we lost at the buzzer, which makes it even tougher. If we play with full intensity over four quarters, we can beat anybody. Tonight we did this just for three quarters."
BARON, JIMMY
Proximus Spirou Charleroi
"We played calm all game long, never lost our focus or rushed the game – even when Ulm made a run at the beginning of the second half. Besides that our defense was very good tonight."
