Bayern Munich routs Galatasaray to snap losing streak
Bayern Munich snapped a five-game losing streak by routing Galatasaray Liv Hospital 88-68 at Audi Dome. Nihad Djedovic led a well-balanced scoring effort with 15 points for the winners, who pulled away early and were never in serious trouble after the first quarter. Munich, which had already secured fourth place in Group C before the game, improved to 4-6. Galatasaray, which was locked into second place in the group, dropped to 6-4. The teams will meet twice more this season in Group F of the Top 16. Bryce Taylor added 13 points on 3-of-3 three-point shooting, Robin Benzing scored 10 and John Bryant tallied 8 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists for the victors. Henry Domercant led Galatasaray with 15 points and Cenk Akyol finished with 12 in defeat.
First quarter: Bryant leads Munich to brilliant start
The hosts won the opening tip and Bryant scored quickly. Milan Macvan got the visitors on the scoreboard with a soft mid-range jumper. Bryant made his impact at both ends with a blocked shot and another score. Domercant put Galatasray up 4-6 with a long jumper. The game stayed at a fast pace as Djedovic drove for a score and Domercant drilled another jumper. Bryant started a Munich run with a tip-in, then Taylor flicked a ball to Heiko Schaffartzik for an easy layup before Taylor’s steal and layup made it 12-8. Galatasaray had no answer for Bryant, who recorded his 8th point in as many minutes on the floor. Akyol ended an 8-0 Bayern run with a pair of free throws. Deon Thompson came in for Bryant and scored on his first touch. Djedovic and Thompson each scored on the offensive glass to give the hosts a 20-10 lead through 10 minutes.
Second quarter: Benzing stars in 11-0 Bayern charge
Hairston threw down a reverse slam for the first points of the quarter. Akyol, with the game’s first three-pointer, narrowed the gap to 22-15. Ender Arslan matched Chevon Troutman free throws with a floater. Malcolm Delaney nailed a three to restore a double-digit lead, but it was short-lived. Arslan responded with a basket-plus-foul and Akyol hit a long jumper. Djedovic punished the visitors with a second-chance basket, but Sinan Guler connected from behind the arc to make it 29-24. Benzing responded in kind. After another Benzing three, Delaney sent a between the legs pass behind to Troutman for a rim-rocking slam. Benzing finished a fast break with a layup to cap an 11-0 charge, prompting a Galatasray timeout. Akyol ended a three-minute scoreless run for the visitors with free throws. Taylor and Arslan traded scores. Hairston showed skill with a pretty three-point play. Steffen Hamman split free throws for his first Euroleague point since February 2009. A Macvan foul shot made it 43-32 at halftime.
Third quarter: Off the bench, Idbihi, Savovic boost Bayern
After a pair of Furkan Aldemir free throws, Boris Savovic connected from behind the arc to recreate a dozen-point lead. Domercant’s first three of the night brought the visitors within 47-39. Djedovic and Arslan traded baskets. Taylor helped keep the hosts in control with a three. Domercant and Benzing traded scores. Yassin Idbihi added his name to the list of scorers and after Aldemir scored inside, a Delaney triple boosted Bayern to 60-45. Free throws by Domercant and Aldemir trimmed the gap. Idbihi kept hot with a basket at one end and block at the other. Savovic netted a second three as Munich piled on. Akyol scored 2 more from the line and Atsur fed Macvan for an easy layup that made it 65-53.
Fourth quarter: They'll meet again in the Top 16!
Idbihi fed Troutman for a basket to the delight of the fans. Idbihi remained hot with a second assists, this time to Djedovic, before scoring himself. A tough layup in between by Guler did not stop Munich. A three-point play by Djedovic made it 74-55. Guler found Aldemir for an alley-oop layup, but Taylor connected on a three from the corner to make it a 20-point game. Another Taylor triple capped an 11-2 run. By the closing minutes, the outcome was clear and both teams’ fans showed their support for two teams that will meet again in the Top 16.
