Vojvoda, Lorant lead Olaj to home win

Szolnoki Olaj improved its chance to advance in Group D by downing VEF Riga 96-84 in Debrecen, Hungary on Wednesday. Olaj improved to 2-5 in Group D while VEF dropped to 1-6. Peter Lorant paced the winners with 19 points. David Vojvoda added 18, Marko Brkic had 14, Strahinja Milosevic got 12 while Stefan Sinovec and newcomer Sergerio Gipson each contributed 10 for Olaj. Gerald Robinson and Janis Timma led VEF with 22 points apiece. Mareks Mejeris added 10 for VEF, which trailed 24-22 late in the first quarter. Olaj went on a 7-0 run and extended its margin to 51-39 at halftime. Nothing changed after the break, as Olaj extended its margn to 71-53 after 30 minutes and kept a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter.

Three-pointers by Vojvoda, Kristzan Wittmann and Lorant gave Olaj an early 9-1 lead. Anzejs Pasecniks tried to change things with a put-back layup that Vojvoda bettered with his second triple. Timma and Robinson stepped up for VEF but Vojvoda and Gipson kept the hosts way ahead, 16-8. Robinson dunked and got help from Timma and Justin Cobbs to keep VEF within 18-16. Gipson hit a mid-range floater and Marton Bader added a tip-in but Arturs Berzins and Mareks Mejeris got the guests even closer 24-22. A buzzer-beating jumper by Sinovec restored a 26-22 Olaj edge after 10 minutes. Brkic followed a triple with a layup to boost Olaj's lead to 31-22 early in the second quarter. Bamba Fall dunked and a corner triple by Mejeris gave VEF hope at 31-27. Brkic and Milosevic kept pacing the hosts and a three-pointer by Wittmann made it a double-digit game, 41-29. Bader capped an 8-0 run with free throws and even when Robinson and Timma shined late in the first half, Olaj kept a 51-39 margin at the break. Milosevic and Lorant took over after the break and a three-point play by Vojvoda broke the game open, 58-41. Timma and Robinson kept pacing VEF but they didn't find much help around. Brkic struck twice from downtown and a jumper by Sinovec gave Olaj a 71-53 margin after 30 minutes. The outcome was clear, so both teams fought for points differential - VEF registered a 10-point win in Riga. Lorant hit a couple of three-pointers but Robinson and Timma brought VEF within 79-63 with 6 minutes left. VEF managed to get within 94-84 on a triple by Cobbs but free throws by Milosevic allowed Olaj to round a big home win.

Head Coaches

ALEKSIC, DRAGAN
Szolnoki Olaj
"Congratulation to my players, because my team is in really bad situation now. We have two injured players and another two played with injections. Bader could not practice in the last day, and also other players lost of lot of energy on Saturday. I’m really happy that somehow my players could find the energy to play well tonight and win this game."
MAZURS, NIKOLAJS
VEF Riga
"We started the game really slow and missed a lot of open shots. I hope it was not a mental problem. After the first half time we could not come back into the game. Congratulation to Szolnoki Olaj."

Players

BRKIC, MARKO
Szolnoki Olaj
"We followed our coach’s intsructions during the game. We knew this team is really strong and gets offense rebounds and fast breaks, but we were able to stop them and control them. This helped us to win the game."
MEJERIS, MAREKS
VEF Riga
"In the first period we missed a lot of shots and let the home team score. Later we could not come back in the game ,maybe because of a lack of our energy. It was really bad for us."
