Montepaschi Siena had enough with a 0-13 run to start the final quarter to defeat KK Zagreb by 56-70 and advance to the 2010 Città di Roma tournament on Tuesday from Group B. The triple tie between Stella Azzurra, KK Zagreb and Montepaschi Siena at 2-1 in the standings forced the latter to win by 8 points or more to advance. Giovanni Severini led the winners with 16 points, Diego Monaldi had 15 and Marco Perin posted 13. For KK Zagreb, Mario Hezonja led all scorers with 29 points. The first half of the man saw several changes in the lead as Montepaschi dominated during the first minutes when Mattia Udom scored for 2-8. A 6-2 run for Zagreb put them back in the game as the first quarter ended with a 14-12 for the Croatians. A 0-9 for Siena in the second quarter put them ahead again and even though Zagreb reacted fast, the Italian team never let go of the lead during the first half to hit the lockerrooms with a 31-36 edge despite the 25-10 blowout in rebounds in Zagreb's favor. The 16 turnovers of the Croatians against the 5 of Siena was the key up to that point. Three full minutes of the third quarter with no points were broken by Mario Hezonja's three for Zagreb as the Croatians seemed to have the upper hand throughout the third period, which finished 47-45 for Zagreb. The last period started with a 0-13 for Montepaschi for the 47-58 as Zagreb was already up to 27 tunrovers. Hezonja finally scored for Zagreb after 5 full minutes with a three-point play. Giovanni Severini made sure to keep Montepaschi out of reach entering the last three minutes 52-64. Two minutes later, Montepaschi was still controlling the situation by 54-70 after Diego Monaldi's bucket to put the Italians in the final game.
