BCM Gravelines Dunkerque opened its Eurocup campaign in Group D with a brilliant 69-75 away win in the Italian capital over Virtus Rome. Abdou Mbaye paced the winners with 17 points, Jonathan Rousselle contributed with 14 points and 3 steals, Yakhouba Diawara scored 12 plus 6 rebounds, Souleyman DIabate added 11 points and Marcus Lewis 10. Quinton Hosley led all scorers with 19 points and 8 fouls drawn for Virtus Rome, Phil Goss sank 15 points and Michal Ignerski 10.

Mbaye scored six of the first 11 points for Gravelines to take an early 2-11 lead. The home team struggled shooting and a Rousselle jumper gave the visitors a 13-23 margin after 10 minutes. Goss’s three-point-play capped a 10-0 Rome run to tie it at 23-23, but the guests remained on fire and Yakhouba Diawara scored a three for a 25-33 advantage for Dunkerque, which finished the half ahead 33-42 on a mid-range jumper by Marcus Lewis. Mbaye extended the cushion to 35-47 early in the third quarter. Bobby Jones cut the margin to 41-47, but a 2-11 charge put Gravelines in control, 43-58. The third quarter finished at 51-62. Jimmy Baron from downtown kept Virtus in the hunt, 63-70, but Gravelines did not give up and sealed the win with free throws by Mbaye before Goss fixed the final 69-75.

DALMONTE, LUCA
Virtus Rome
"Tonight we played against a team that beat us athletically and that was much more ready than us, for the advantage of having started before and also for the solid foundation that it has maintained since last year. We were compromised on an emotional level, we fell behind the first few minutes without being able, except for a time in the second quarter, to come closer. This distance did not allow us to ever have a concrete reaction in the game."
MONSCHAU, CHRISTIAN
BCM Gravelines Dunkerque
"We are pretty happy about the win because Virtus is a good team in Italy and it was our first away game. Virtus Roma has a great team, with great players, great staff and we had to play our best. The most important part of the game was the press and we did not turn the ball over to it. This was the key to the game. We want our defense to be consistent and this is the most important part and hardest to keep constant when you play two or three times a week."
