Scoring runs from Sutton, Behanan and Shields spark Trento

Dolomiti Energia Trento relied on a string of individual scoring runs to secure a deserved 85-75 opening night victory over ASVEL Villeurbanne in Group D. The Italian team led nearly all the way after bouncing back from a poor start behind Dominique Sutton, who scored 11 points in the first quarter. Then it was the turn of Chane Behanan to add 9 points in the second quarter, before Shavon Shields stepped up at a key time by scoring 7 points in 75 seconds in the middle of the fourth. Behanan led the scoring with 19 points plus 5 rebounds and 4 assists, while Sutton had 6 rebounds and 3 steals to go with his 13 points. David Lighty led ASVEL with 17 points, but the visiting team was undone by a 46.8% two-point shooting percentage compared to Trento’s 54.2%.

Asvel started strong to establish a 2-8 advantage, but then Sutton took over to give his team a 25-18 lead at the end of the first. The opening minutes of the second period were low scoring, but Asvel slowly gathered momentum and John Roberson’s lay-up made it 28-26. Yannick Franke finally hit Trento’s first triple after nine previous misses to re-establish a cushion, before a showtime alley-oop between Toto Forray and Behanan made it 40-28 to complete a 12-2 run. Behanan soon added five more points to protect the double-digit lead, but Asvel finished the first half well as the scoring pace heated up and Justin Harper’s buzzer-beating triple made it 46-41 at the interval. In a low-scoring third quarter, Trento stretched its lead to 59-47 with a 6-0 run, and Franke beat the buzzer to make it 64-54 at the end of the third. Asvel rallied by scoring the opening 8 points of the fourth quarter, but Behanan netted his first points of the half to reignite Trento and Shields added his crucial flurry of baskets to make it 81-69. AJ Slaughter’s triple gave ASVEL hope, but it was too little and too late as Trento held on.

In Round Two, ASVEL will host Ratiopharm Ulm and Trento will play its first road game of the campaign at Zenit St Petersburg.

"We knew we needed to match up their energy and do a good job on the defensive end, boxing them out and running the floor in transition. We did that, and we were good moving the ball trying to attack the second side. I'm happy about this victory, we knew this game wasn't going to be easy at all."

“Rebounds gave us control, and at the end of the first half we talked about the importance of our one on one defense. This was the key in the second half, we had more fast break baskets and played better sharing the ball against a physical team.”

JACKSON, JD
ASVEL Villeurbanne
"Congratulations to Trento, they played a good game and they won the first game of this Eurocup season. In the first half we should have been more disciplined after our turnovers, instead we let them run the floor and score a lot in transition. These kind of mistakes can't happen at a high level in an European competition. In the second half we did a good job coming back and giving ourselves a chance to win the game anyway, but we ended up making some mistakes on defense, allowing them too many easy baskets".
