Galatasaray Medical Park Istanbul improved to 2-1 in Last 16 Group L by downing ratiopharm Ulm 82-66 at home on Tuesday. Galatasaray grabbed its second consecutive win in Group L and Ulm dropped to 1-2. Both teams will meet again in Germany next week. Jamont Gordon paced the winners with 18 points. Carlos Arroyo added 15 and 8 assists, Milan Macvan had 14 points and Furkan Aldemir got 10 for Galatasaray, that was without David Hawkins. John Bryant led Ulm with 18 points and a game-high 7 rebounds. Galatasaray opened the game with a 9-0 run and an inspired Gordon soon made the hosts boost their margin to 21-8. An unstoppable Bryant brought Ulm within 21-13 after 10 minutes. He got some help from Allan Ray and Steven Esterkamp to give Ulm its first lead, 36-37, near halftime. Galatasaray used a 10-0 run to get the lead for good, 46-37, and soon boosted its margin to 62-44 midway through the third quarter. Ulm never gave up but Galatasaray managed to keep a safe lead from that moment until the final buzzer.
Macvan, Gordon and Arroyo struck from downtown in a 9-0 opening run that sent Galatasaray fans to their feet. Bryant hit a jump hook and matched Aldemir's huge slam with a tip-in. Ray hit an off-balance shot but Aldemir, Arroyo and Gordon combined for all points in a 6-0 run that made Ulm call timeout at 17-6. Gordon stayed on fire with an acrobatic basket and even when Ray hit a long jumper, Macvan and Cenk Akyol gave the hosts a 21-8 margin. Esterkamp downed a wild turnaround jumper and a three-pointer by Philipp Schwethelm brought Ulm within 21-13. Back-to-back baskets by Daniel Theis and Lance Jeter made it a five-point game, 22-17, after 10 minutes. Esterkamp and Erden Arslan traded triples early in the second quarter and a jumper by Boni Ndong gave Galatasaray a 27-20 edge. Erwin Dudley nailed a shot from the elbow but Ray followed a tip-in with a mid-range jumper. Dudley kept pacing Galatasaray with another jumper but Bryant followed a power basket with a jump hook to keep Ulm within 32-28. Arroyo made free throws but Schwethelm erased it with a put-back layup and a triple by a red hot Bryant brought the guests as close as 34-33. Aldemir and Jeter exchanged layups and an easy basket by Bryant completed Ulm's comeback, 36-37. Aldemir dunked it off a timeout and back-to-back triples by Gordon and Macvan gave Galatasaray a 44-37 lead at halftime.
Arroyo nailed a mid-range jumper right after the break to cap a 10-0 Galatasaray half. Per Guenther and Akyol exchanged triples but Gordon insisted from downtown to make the hosts restore a double-digit lead, 52-40. Keaton Nankivil and Guenther tried to change things with back-to-back layups but Gordon and Macvan buried respective three-pointers in a 10-0 run that broke the game open, 62-44. Guenther made free throws, igniting a 0-7 run that Bryant capped with a bomb from downtown. Arroyo made free throws off a timeout, Bryant scored down low and an off-balance basket by Macvan fixed the score at 66-53 after 30 minutes. Schwethelm buried a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter. Engin Atsur shined with a backdoor layup but Jeter brought Ulm within single digits, 68-59, with over 7 minutes to go. Arroyo punished the guests' defense with a triple and Arslan copied him right after that to boost Galatasaray's lead to 74-60. Theis stepped up with a put-back basket but Dudley and Macvan sealed the outcome, 77-62, with 3 minutes left. Nothing changed from that moment, as Galatasaray fans had plenty of time to celebrate an important home win.
