Dyson's late heroics lead Hapoel over Ulm for second place

In a direct fight to finish second in Group D, Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem downed ratiopharm Ulm 69-64 at home on Wednesday. Hapoel improved to 5-3 record to secure the spot as group runner-up, while Ulm finished third with a 4-4 record and Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar fourth. Curtis Jerrells paced the winners with 20 points, Amar’e Stoudemire added 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Jerome Dyson scored 13 points, including 9 in a decisive 12-1 run that sealed the outcome in the final minutes. Raymar Morgan led Ulm with 13 points and Braydon Hobbs added 11. Jerusalem played excellent defense before halftime, limiting Ulm to 5-of-14 two-point shooting (35.7%) and 5-of-17 from downtown (29.4%) to get a double-digit lead, 38-26. Ulm slightly improved its offense after the break and limited Jerusalem 19 points in the next 14 minutes. Dyson stepped up late for Jerusalem and led his team to an important win.

Da'Sean Butler and Per Guenther shined early to give Ulm a 6-10 lead. Stoudemire dunked off a spin move and added a three-pointer in a 6-0 run that put Jerusalem in charge, 12-10. Stoudemire kept pushing Hapoel with 13 first-quarter points and got plenty of help from Lior Eliyahu to give Jerusalem a 19-14 lead after 10 minutes. Hobbs, Tim Ohlbrecht and Taylor Braun each hit a triple in a 0-9 run that put Ulm back ahead, 21-23. Jerrells, Shawn Jones and Dijon Thompson stepped up for Hapoel, as they combined for 15 points in a mammoth 17-1 run that gave Jerusalem its first double-digit lead, 38-24. A driving basket by Butler fixed the halftime score at 38-26. Hobbs and Morgan tried to change things after the break but Jerrells and Stoudemire restored a 43-32 Jerusalem lead. Hobbs hit a triple and an outstanding Morgan added 7 quick points, which caused the hosts call timeout at 46-42. Jerrells had all the points in a 7-0 Jerusalem run, but Augustine Rubit and an unstoppable Morgan brought Ulm within 53-46 after 30 minutes. Braun joined the three-point shootout and Babb struck twice from downtown to complete the visitors' comeback at 55-57 midway through the fourth quarter. Hobbs gave Ulm a 5-point lead, but Dyson split free throws, sank consecutive triples and added a layup in a 12-1 run that sealed the outcome at 69-63 in the final minute.

"I want to start with the big picture; tonight we finished the [regular season] in second place. Our group was a tough group with teams like Valencia, which is a EuroLeague team and they showed in the Spanish League that they have more points than Baskonia and they fight with the top teams; we have Lokomotiv, a team that was in the [EuroLeague] Final Four. Mentality. Budget. Everything. And Ulm plays with the same system, like Valencia, as last season and is dominating the German League. They beat Bamberg by 15 points and we saw in Israel what kind of team Bamberg is one week ago when they beat Maccabi. So you cannot be so good, because how Bamberg lost seven games from one basket in EuroLeague. This means that you cannot dominate these games. And we overcame this with so many problems, because we the injuries to the players were so many. "

"I think it’s impressive that both team already advanced to the next round and still so many fans came and presented such a good basketball atmosphere. It’s fun to play in an atmosphere like that. Unfortunately my team in the first half had in mind that we don’t need this win to qualify and that is how we played in the first half. But I’m happy about the change of attitude in the second half; we fought, we even got the lead although we were down 12 at halftime and we showed some character. In the end Jerusalem made some big plays and deserved to win. Overall I felt it was a very good basketball game. "
