Shields, Sutton carry Trento past Ulm

Dolomiti Energia Trento shrugged off an early 13-point deficit to finish off its 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season with an 84-94 victory at ratiopharm Ulm. Shavon Shields paced five Trento scorers in double figures with 19 points as the Italian side won its fourth straight game and fifth in the last six to improve to 6-4. Trento will not know which place it finished in the group until later Wednesday. Dominique Sutton added 17 points and 9 rebounds, Jorge Gutierrez chipped in 14 points and 5 assist, Beto Gomes hit 4 three-pointers for 16 points and Toto Forray scored 10 points. Ulm lost its seventh straight game to bow out of the competition with a 2-8 record despite 11 points each from Da’Sean Butler, Isaac Fotu and Joschka Ferner. Ulm center Tim Ohlbrecht picked up 9 points in his first action of the season after missing a full year due to a knee injury.

Toure Murry scored 5 points early in the game as Ulm jumped ahead 8-0. Gomes finally got Trento on the board after more than two minutes with a three-pointer. Ohlbrecht entered the game for the first time in the season and hit a put-back and Murry connected again as the lead reached 19-10. Ulm used three-pointers to extend the lead with David Kramer, Butler and Ferner all hitting from downtown and Ohlbrecht’s three-point play increased the margin to 33-20 after 10 minutes. Trento made some good adjustments in the second quarter and Gutierrez hit a three-pointer and a layup in a 3-11 start to the period. Trey Lewis and Till Pape both connected from long range to keep Ulm up 42-33. Forray heated up with a triple and a layup in a 2-11 run spurt to knot the game at 44-44. And it was even at 46-46 at the break.

Forray’s three-pointer early in the second half put Trento ahead for the first time 48-49. Fotu and Sutton carried their teams over the following minutes and the lead switched hands five times until Lewis’s put back started a 6-0 spurt as Ulm went up 58-53. But Gomes hit two three and Sutton scored 5 points to help Trento close the quarter on a 2-15 run to lead 62-70. Yannick Franke’s free throws to start the fourth quarter upped the margin to 10 points. Ulm got back into the game with its young reserves led by Ferner with 2 three-pointers and a dunk in a 13-4 run to pull to within 75-76. But Shields took over after that with 9 points in a 2-11 surge to reclaim a 10-point lead, 77-87. Shields added one more score and Gomes nailed another three to finish off Ulm for good.

“Congrats to Trento for making it to the next round - well deserved. I like their style of basketball, they’re filled with energy and intensity in defense and they can create a lot of problems for the opponent’s offense. When the pressure is so high that our regular passes are not possible, we struggle a lot. 17 turnovers are way too much, on the other hand Gomes, Shields and Gutierrez made tough shots. All in all it was a very important game for us, because Trento does a lot of things Munich does as well. I hope we learn from that. I’m happy that our young guys had their impact today. We were able to keep the minutes low, because we need all the energy in three days.”

"We are very happy that we could advance to the Top 16 in a group like this. We wanted to follow our plan and showed a good reaction after the first 10 minutes, when Ulm played very well. My players were able to change the energy at the end of third and beginning of fourth quarter. Our team needs to play with energy, needs to run and never give up on defense."

" It is for sure an important win. We came out a little slow, but had a good second quarter, then weathered the storm in the third and got the win. Our defense is what changed things in the second quarter. They were hitting a lot of shots, and were kind of in a rhythm, but we got some steals and some easy buckets that led to us getting back in the game."
