Kyle Landry - BC Triumph Lyubertsy - EC12 (photo Mikus Klavins, VEF Riga)BC Triumph Lyubertsy picked up its first victory in the Last 16 by downing BK Banvit Bandirma 93-89, thus keeping alive its chances of grabbing a quarterfinal spot. Triumph improved to 1-3, but remains at the bottom of Group I, while Banvit dropped to 2-2 and after Week 4 will be in a share of the second place. Banvit, however, won the potential tiebreaker as it celebrated a 7-point victory in a match-up of these two teams a week ago. On Wednesday, Triumph led for essentially the entire game, grabbing the lead for good in the third minute and never looking back. The margin was as big as 17 points before Banvit closed the gap in the final minutes and threatened to make a comeback, but Kyle Landry and Tywain McKee sealed the deal. Landry finished with 17 points plus 13 points while McKee scored 10 points and dished out 10 assists. Sergey Karasev netted 19 in victory, Yuval Naimy had 16 on 4-for-9 three-point shooting, and Devin Searcy contributed with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Chuck Davis scored 21 for Banvit, while Kalin Lucas and Vladimir Stimac each finished with 14. Serkan Erdogan had 13 points and Izzet Turkyilmaz chipped in with 12.

After Stimac and Searcy traded baskets to start the game, Searcy scored a couple more layups before Evgeny Valiev and Naimy hit back-to-back triples to give Triumph 16-9 lead. Stimac scored 7 of the first 9 points for Banvit, before Erdogan nailed a triple and a jumper, cutting it to 20-16. But Artem Kuzyakin and Tasamin Mitchell hit back-to-back jump shots for the hosts, restoring an 8-point advantage, and Naimy made it 28-19 after 10 minutes. Triumph's lead reached double figures for the first time with Landry's layup at the start of the second quarter, but Turkyilmaz answered with a triple and a layup for 32-24. However, Naimy hit another three-pointer before baskets inside from Searcy and Sergey Karasev helped the hosts maintain the double-digit margin. After Davis's dunk got Banvit within 45-38, Landry scored one from downtown, and made a dunk to round out the scoring in the first half, and give Triumph a 52-38 halftime advantage.

Erdogan and Mitchell traded jumpers to start the third quarter, and Triumph took a 61-44 lead with Searcy making a dunk and Naimy hitting a three-pointer. Banvit cut the deficit to 10 points with triples from Davis and Sammy Mejia, before Karasev made sure the hosts kept the margin in double figures, 66-52. While the visitors became somewhat more aggressive offensively, often going to the foul line and making 7 of 8 free throws, Naimy hit his fourth three-pointer and Triumph took a 71-61 lead at the start of the final 10 minutes. After a series of free throws on both sides, Karasev and Kalin Lucas traded triples before Davis added a three-pointer of his own and Lucas made a jumper for 79-72. The hosts called a timeout that resulted in McKee hitting free throws for some breathing room, and Karasev nailing another three for a 12-point edge. However, Lucas made fastbreak layups on back-to-back possessions, and Turkyilmaz hit a three-pointer to close the deficit to 84-80. With game going towards a dramatic finish, Triumph turned to its defense, forced couple of turnovers and three-pointer from Landry made it 89-82 going into the last minute. Banvit did not give in, as Stimac and Lucas went 5 for 6 from the foul line, and Mejia hit a jumper for 91-89 with 9 seconds to go. However, McKee from the foul line immediately raised the margin back to 4 points and secured Triumph its first Last 16 victory.

Head Coaches

KARASEV, VASILY
BC Triumph Lyubertsy
"I’m glad we won and showed that we can play with a high-level team. Banvit won the game against Euroleague team Anadolu Efes and that means that our rival is very strong. Of course we wanted to win with more difference, but the game was tough, and we fought till the end."
ENE, ORHUN
Banvit Bandirma
"I’m not satisfied with the game, we started the game very soft. We allowed 52 points in the first half. We knew Triumph is a strong team, they were first in the first group stage, and this game was the last chance for Triumph. We expected a tough game, but we didn’t put enough energy on the court."

Players

KARASEV, SERGEY
BC Triumph Lyubertsy
"It was a very hard game. This victory is very important for us, it means that we can continue to fight to reach the Eurocup playoffs. We have very important games ahead and we don’t have room to make mistakes."
VEYSELOGLU, ERKAN
Banvit Bandirma
"We lost; we started the game bad, Triumph got a 15-point difference. At the end we caught them, but we lacked time to take the lead. Maybe the traffic here and the flight influenced us, but it’s not an excuse for us."
