Shved, Boungou-Colo lead Khimki to home win

Khimki Moscow Region started the Top 16 on the right foot by downing Lietkabelis Panevezys 88-80 at home in Group F on Wednesday. Alexey Shved led the winners with 21 points, Nobel Boungou-Colo and Robbie Hummel each added 18 while E.J. Rowland had 10, 6 rebounds and 9 assists for Khimki. Ben Madgen led Lietkabelis with 19 points, Zygimantas Skucas added 13, Lorenzo Williams 11 and Ksistof Lavrinovic 10 for the visitors. Lietkabelis hit 12-of-31 three-point shots (38.7%), but was 12 of 22 from the foul line (54.5%). Khimki outrebounded its opponents 38-27 and allowed Lietkabelis to pull down just 7 offensive boards in one of the keys to this game.

Three-pointers by Boungou-Colo and Sergey Monya gave Khimki an early 8-2 lead. Donatas Tarolis struck from downtown and Simas Galdikas scored down low to keep Lietkabelis within 10-7. Shved and Williams joined the three-point shootout and an outstanding Rowland caused the visitors to call timeout at 17-11. Boungou-Colo hit another triple, but Zygimantas Janavicius and Tadas Rinkunas got Lietkabelis within 23-18 after 10 minutes. Khimki found new go-to guys, as Egor Vialtsev and Hummel helped the hosts make it a double-digit game. Shved capped a 14-0 Khimki run with a driving layup, good for a 34-20 lead. Ben Madgen and Williams stepped up for Lietkabelis and the hosts called timeout at 37-27. Lavrinovic and Madgen each hit one from beyond the arc to make it 37-33 at halftime. Stanislav Itnilskiy took over after the break to restore a 43-33 margin. Madgen followed a jumper with a three-pointer and got help from Gintaras Leonavicius to bring Lietkabelis within 48-44. Free throws by Dmitry Sokolov ignited a 6-0 spurt that Rowland capped with a fast break layup, after which Lietkabelis called timeout at 56-46. Hummel rescued Khimki with a tip-in and Jacob Pullen followed a triple with a buzzer-beating floater for a 65-53 lead after 30 minutes. Hummel struck again from downtown, Boungou-Colo added an acrobatic three-point play and Shved gave Khimki a 73-59 margin with seven minutes left. Skucas and Lavrinovic fueled a 0-7 Lietkabelis run, but Shved and Hummel kept Khimki way ahead, 80-69. Skucas kept pacing Lietkabelis and Leonavicius buried a wild step-back triple. A free throw by Tarolis made it a 3-point game, 83-80, with 35 seconds left, but that was as close as the visitors would get.

"Very important win because we played our first EuroCup Top 16 game. It’s true that we finished the regular season in first place in our group, but now it’s a 0-0 situation and all the teams are equal. So it was very important to start win a win. Lietkabelis plays very well and with discipline; they have players with experience. But tonight we showed really good defense during some minutes; that was a key reason for our win."
MAKSVYTIS, KAZYS
Lietkabelis Panevezys
"I’m satisfied with the way my players fought, but not happy with the quality of our game. Both Khimki and us had a break that influenced the game quality. We tried not to allow easy points after Khimki’s offensive rebounds and quick transition that our opponent does well. These factors didn’t allow us to have a better result. I think we lacked concentration and some luck."

Players

HUMMEL, ROBBIE
Khimki Moscow Region
"I think we had some good shots and missed some. Our defense wasn’t great as we gave up some easy ones from them. It was a tough game, but we were really good and moved the ball well finding each other. In the end Lietkabelis made some tough shots, but I think we played pretty good defense to stop them and block their shots. We’ve been off for a while since our last game and probably lost some rhythm that was tough. We came out pretty good in the first and third quarters, but struggled in the second and fourth. It was good to be back in [after a nose injury]."
WILLIAMS, LORENZO
Lietkabelis Panevezys
"Both teams fought hard. We knew it was gonna be a tough game playing here in Moscow, but we felt like we had been prepared to play as we had a lot of games that prepared us for this against Zalgiris and Lietuvos Rytas in the Lithuanian League. I just feel like tonight we came up a little bit short. We could have done a better job rebounding the ball. That was the main difference. Overall, we are not happy, but we still have a home game and we think we can do better next time. We came here with a lot of confidence. We got some confidence from the wins in our local league and from the EuroCup first round also. If we stay together and do it hard, we can play with anybody."
