Virtus holds off Darussafaka for first win in Top 16

Segafredo Virtus Bologna captured its first victory in the 7DAYS EuroCup Top 16 by winning a tough battle against Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul 83-72 at home. Milos Teodosic tallied 19 points to lead Virtus, which improved its record to 1-1 in Group E. Julian Gamble added 15 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks, Kyle Weems scored 11 points and Stefan Markovic chipped in 7 points and 8 assists for the winning side. Doron Lamb paced Darussafaka with 16 points while Bonzie Colson and Sinan Guler both scored 13 points in the loss, which dropped the Turkish team’s mark in the group to 1-1.

Virtus came out guns-a-blazing with a 13-2 start including big dunks from Gamble and Weems. Darussafaka needed almost 4 minutes before finally hitting its first basket by Dogus Ozdemiroglu after an 0-for-10 shooting start. Vince Hunter added two more dunks for the home side as the lead grew to 17-4. Lamb knocked down a three-pointer to start a 3-10 close to the first quarter, which included a Gary Browne triple just before the buzzer to make it 20-14 after a nightmare start. Filippo Baldi Rossi’s three-point play extended the margin to 25-16 before Kartal Ozmizrak hit a three for the visitors. Colson made it 27-23. The hosts punched back with a 12-4 surge as Weems scored 5 points for a 37-25 advantage. Six straight Darussafaka points cut the deficit to 6 only to see Teodosic drain a three in a 10-2 finish to the quarter and a 47-33 Virtus lead at the break.

Colson started the second half with a triple and he added 4 more points as Darussafaka cut the gap to single digits 52-43. Teodosic free throws re-established a 12-point lead, but Darussafaka closed the third quarter on a 1-6 spurt to trail just 58-52 after 30 minutes. Virtus responded with a three-pointer from Baldi Rossi to start the quarter and two Gamble scores made it 68-54. With Virtus up 68-56 and just under 6 minutes left in the game, Markovic and Browne were ejected from the game. Virtus extended the lead to 70-57, but Darussafaka would not go away with Lamb’s triple cutting it to 70-62 with 5 minutes to play. David Cournooh answered with a crucial three-point play followed by Teodosic free throws and a 75-62 margin. Teodosic added 2 more foul shots and a Gamble dunk finished off Darussafaka’s hopes at 79-66.

Teodosic near perfect from the line

Milos Teodosic, as usual, was nearly automatic from the free-throw line as he made 14 of 15 free throws among his 19 points. Both marks were personal highs in the 7DAYS EuroCup; he went 9-of-9 from the charity stripe for FMP Belgrade against Lietuvos Rytas in March 2007.

Beating Darussafaka at own game

Darussafaka came into the game as the top-ranked defense, giving up just 70.8 points per game. Virtus held the visitors to just 72 points, tying the team’s fewest points allowed this season - in Rounds 3 and 10 against MoraBanc Andorra and AS Monaco respectively.

Telling numbers

Virtus made just 4 of 25 three-pointers (16.0 percent) but survived thanks to holding Darussafaka to 39.2% on two-pointers and 17.9% from long range.

Next games

Virtus will stay in Italy and travel to Dolomiti Energia Trento on Tuesday, January 21. Darussafaka heads back home and will welcome Partizan NIS Belgrade the same day.

"Really a tough game and a tough team. The best defense in the EuroCup. They're also very talented and they know how to stop opposing attacks. We need to be more concentrated when we bounce back. Whoever gets off the bench must be focused on the individual tasks they have to perform. They come onto the court for a high-level competition and there's no room for repeated mistakes. I'm very happy for the victory despite the nervousness. The first quarter we started very well with the right choices and energy and then we ended up falling and we can't afford that. That's why I'm talking about the bench because you have to put that energy into it and it has to be there in games like this. The physicality in the EuroCup is rising considerably. We all need to understand that. I'm very satisfied with the maturity the guys showed in the last few minutes even without the starting point guard. We used our head and the clock very well."

"First of all, congratulations to Virtus. At the beginning of the game, we were nervous and we couldn't find any baskets, we left too many rebounds. In the second half, we did better and matched Virtus. The percentages were similar, but the free throws penalized us. Markovic's assists certainly triggered Virtus's long shots in the best possible way. We had prepared the game, but this is a tough team and it will certainly be a very difficult group."

"We knew that today we had to play great defense to get our first victory in the EuroCup. We started immediately strong, we kept this mentality for 40 minutes. We had seen that Darussafaka is a very physical team; we studied the game with Trento, we were prepared."
GAMBLE, JULIAN
Segafredo Virtus Bologna
"It was a tough game for sure. It was a long time since we were back in Paladozza. Happy to play in front of these fans again. This place really feels like home. We wanted to come out and give a better effort than we did against Partizan. Partizan is a great team, but we know we didn’t show actually who we were. Our goal is to continue to get better and learn from our mistakes and we got a good home win today."
