Panellinios took care of business early and decisively on the way to handing Gran Canaria 2014 a 89-60 defeat in the Group G opener for both teams on Tuesday. After finding a way to shackle Jim Moran, who exploded for Gran Canarias first 11 points, Panellinios had little trouble cruising to victory. The game was out of hand by halftime, mainly thanks to a 13-0 run Panellinios reeled off just when Gran Canaria was threatening to get the deficit down to single digits. The win was a team effort while Devin Smith led the way with 25 points. Roderick Blakney added 17 while Joshua Davis and Kostas Charalampidis scored 12 each. Gran Canaria got 11 points from Jaycee Carroll in addition to Moran's early contribution. Panellinios dominated the game in every aspect and sent a message that it will be a force to reckoned with, especially when supported by its fans, in this year's competition.
Blakney opened the scoring with 4 straight points for Panellinios before Moran dropped a three-pointer for the visitors. Blakney answered with one of his own from long range, but Moran then dropped 2 more triples to tie the game at 9-9. Georgios Kalaitzis nailed one from beyond the arc for the home team before Moran and Blakney traded two-pointers. Davis scored 7 straight points and Charalampidis added a layup to put Panellinios up 24-14 after 10 minutes. Manolis Papamakarios started the second period with a score inside for Panellinios and Davis added a triple moments later to earn a 15-point advantage. Carroll went on his own 6-2 spurt for Gran Canaria, but Smith sparked a 13-0 Panellinios run with a layup to grab a 44-20 advantage. Melvin Sanders finally responded for the visitors with a three-pointer. Moments later Carroll followed with another triple for Gran Canaria, but Smith connected from downtown as well. Panellinios went into the halftime break enjoying a 48-26 cushion.
Blakney once again got his team rolling with a three-pointer to start the second half. Smith and Gran Canaria's James Augustine then traded field goals before Will McDonald scored a bucket and drew a foul for a three-point play for the visitors. Papamakarios assisted Smith for a layup, but Josh Fisher drilled a three-pointer for the guests, 58-36. McDonald countered 4 foul shots by Panellinios with a pair of layups. Fisher scored again, this time on the inside, but Djuro Ostojic responded for the home team with a two-pointer. After the two squads traded trips to the foul line, Carroll hit a layup to get the lead under 20 at 66-47 going into the final stanza. Smith slashed in for a layup to start the fourth period as Gran Canaria was totally taken out of the game by Panellinios's defense. Papamakarios scored back-to-back baskets with his team wanting to not only the secure the win but also to capture the largest margin of victory possible. Smith added a dunk, and Davis followed up with a layup to extend the lead to 30 points. Sanders finally scored for Gran Canaria in the period by hitting a three-pointer. Panellinios kept the heat on till the end to protect its valuable 89-60 advantage in case the extra points are needed later in the regular season.
