CSKA snaps losing streak by mauling Milan

CSKA Moscow manhandled EA7 Emporio Armani Milan 101-64 on Friday to snap a three-game losing streak. The champs improved to 13-4 to remain atop the standings, while Milan dropped its 10th in a row and now sits alone in last place at 4-13. CSKA led from start to finish, scoring the game’s first 6 points, going ahead 27-9 after 10 minutes and then using a 14-0 run to start the second quarter to effectively put the game out of reach. Nando De Colo scored 20 points to pace the winners, for whom every player in uniform made a basket. Andrey Vorontsevich was 4 for 6 from downtown for 18 points, Vitaly Fridzon and Dmitry Kulagin added 12 points apiece and Milos Teodosic contributed 10 points and 7 assists. Milan Macvan gave a great effort for the Italian champs with 19 points and 11 rebounds, Krunoslav Simon scored 15 and dished 5 assists and Miroslav Raduljica scored 10 in defeat. Milan committed 23 turnovers, which marked the second-most in club history in the EuroLeague.

Dmitry Kulagin made his impact felt with a blocked shot that he gathered himself and took to the other end for a layup. Kyle Hines made it 6-0 before Ricky Hickman split free throws to get Milan on the scoreboard. CSKA continued cruising and De Colo’s three-pointer gave the hosts a double-digit lead, 16-4. Fridzon’s three-pointer extended the gap to 23-7. Teodosic found Vorontsevich for a jumper on the buzzer to make it 27-9 after 10 minutes. CSKA took all doubt out of the game with a 14-0 charge to open the second quarter. Hickman’s fast break dunk off a turnover finally got Milan going after four minutes. Milan settled in as Macvan sank free throws and Raduljica hit a jumper. De Colo tacked on 2 free throws to make it 56-25 at the break. Simon heated up for Milan and made it 59-32 with a jumper, after which the hosts called timeout to settle down. The difference was back at 30 as De Colo and Vorontsevich hit threes, but the Milan offense was now finding more ways to score. Vorontsevich ended the third quarter with his fourth three of the game to make it 78-46. CSKA did not let up in the fourth quarter as all 12 players scored. Teodosic fed Semen Antonov for a fast-break slam, which took the margin to 40. The lead peaked at 101-59 on a Joel Freeland layup.

"We had two different motivated teams. With all respect to Armani, I would like to talk about ours. We were coming in the EuroLeague from three bad results. We did correct this. We opened the game very motivated and aggressive, both defensively and offensively. At the end of the first quarter the score was almost 20 for us. We kept the same tempo in the second quarter. Definitely we kind of relaxed a little bit in the start of the third, but it’s to be expected. We respected the game for all 40 minutes. We’re the better team, so we deserved to win. Congratulations to my players. "

"I can be ashamed really of how we played the first 20 minutes. Everything we spoke about in preparation for the game, first of all how to attack aggressive defense without turnovers, we did the opposite. We let them run the game after that, scoring easy baskets and getting confidence. It was all over after the first quarter. It is really disappointing. I am really sorry for our fans and our owner. After two games against Fenerbahce and Cantu [in the Italian League] in which we didn’t play so bad, I expected one step ahead, talking about quality of the game, intensity, concentration. But everything was the opposite. Congratulations to the home team on the game they played. "

"I can’t say that we won easily today. We lost three games in a row so we had to come back to playing our game and to our plan. Despite the fact that we had only three days after the VTB United League round to prepare for the game, we took it seriously. It was hard for EA7 Milan to resist today. We showed good basketball all the time on the court. Now we need to keep this tempo. Then it will be tough to fight for our future opponents."
DE COLO, NANDO

"For the moment this is just one game. We know we had a tough week. Last three games it wasn't how we expect it, how we play, wasn't that good. Now we have to come back on the court, and play much better. For me, first games back are never easy. You get some minutes, try to get some rhythm. But step by step and day by day I try to do better. "
