Spirou takes first road win, sweeps Nymburk

Proximus Spirou Charleroi fueled its Last 32 hopes with a 67-73 victory over CEZ Nymburk to further compact the Group C standings. Spirou improved to 3-5 and denied both Nymburk and SLUC Nancy the chance to advance to the Last 32 this week. Spirou also swept the season series from the Czech champs, who fell to 4-4. Andre Collins paced the Spirou attack with 16 points, while Zab Dowdell recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds and William Hatcher netted 12 points in victory. Christian Burns led Nymburk with 16 points, Tre Simmons added 13 and Jiri Welsch 10. Spirou used a 0-11 run to start the second quarter to take the lead for good. It was still a 1-point game early in the second half before Spirou rebuilt a double-digit advantage and the visitors held off Nymburk’s late push.

The teams traded baskets in the early minutes, with Burns scoring 5 points in the first five minutes. Four free throws by Garrett Stutz and a Vojtech Hruban three-pointer highlighted a 9-0 Nymburk run to take a 16-9 lead. Collins countered from downtown for Spirou, which tied the game and a Dowdell jumper. Welsch converted a basket-plus-foul before Wen Mukubu made it 19-18 after 10 minutes. Leigh Enobakhare free throws put the visitors on top and triggered a 0-11 start to the second quarter. Enobakhare added another basket and Dowdell scored 3 points as Spirou climbed to 19-29. Tre Simmons revived Nymburk despite a Collins three. Derek Raivio scored 3 points over two possessions and Simmons closed the gap to 30-33 at the break.

Petr Benda scored to bring Nymburk within 1, but Loic Schwartz sank a three-pointer and Torin Francis scored inside to put Spirou up 6. Francis and Dowdell further extended the Spirou lead to 36-44. Welsch countered with a three, but Collins scored twice to make it 39-49. Raivio free throws ended the third quarter with the hosts trailing 43-51. Welsch and Raivio got Nymburk within 6, but a pair of Hatcher triples made it a double-digit game and Collins third three of the game boosted the difference to 49-62. Burns sparked one last Nymburk rally and Raivio free throws brought the hosts within 58-64 with two minutes remaining. A pair of Dowdell baskets and 3 free throws in the final minute by Collins preserved the Spirou victory.

"The main reason for our loss is that our opponent was fresher. I think that they had fresher legs. They made some shots in crucial moments. We had many open looks that we missed. Offensively, we did not start bad. We attacked Dylan Page and he took his fouls very early. The tactic was good. We got the lead, but we let them come back. In second quarter, we let them have a run. In the third part of the game, the unsportsmanlike and technical fouls hurt us. Defensively, we did a pretty good job, much better than in the first game, but as I said, we missed many open shots today. I hate to say this, but our schedule reflected on us."

"It was an important victory for us to stay alive in the Eurocup. This is also the first road win in this competition for us. I know that Nymburk plays a lot of games. It is pretty hard for them. Today, it wasn't the best game from them. They did not shoot well, but I understand why. They travel a lot, they play a lot of games. But OK, we needed this victory and we did it. I think that we deserved it because we played better. We were up for the most of the time. They were tired and we used it."
