Lasme lifts UNICS over Limoges

UNICS Kazan erased a 14-point second-quarter deficit to edge Limoges CSP 66-69 on Tuesday at Palais Des Sports De Beaublanc. Stephane Lasme’s put-back and then steal on the game’s final two possessions gave UNICS the victory in a game that saw six lead changes in the fourth quarter alone. Lasme finished with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks in helping UNICS to a 2-0 start in Group H of the Top 16. Danilo Andusic added 12 points, former Limoges player Jamar Smith tallied 11 points and 7 assists and Anton Ponkrashov posted 10 points and 7 assists for the winners. William Howard led Limoges with 14 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting plus 7 rebounds. Axel Bouteille added 11 points and Josh Carter 10 as Limoges fell to 0-2 in the group. The game was Limoges’s first home game since the sudden death of team president and former player Frederic Forte. He was honored by fans with a standing ovation during the fourth minute of the game; Forte wore No. 4 during his playing days.

Mam Jaiteh scored the game’s first 4 points and Dru Joyce nailed a three-pointer as the hosts went ahead 7-3. The crowd rose to its feet at the six-minute mark – the fourth minute of the game – in appreciation of the late Forte. Despite a pair of Lasme blocks, Limoges remained in control and stretched the lead to 14-5 on a Kenny Hayes triple and Danny Gibson layup. UNICS called timeout and Ponkrashov, fresh off the bench, scored inside. A Bouteille runner made it 17-10 after 10 minutes. Limoges center Tautvydas Lydeka took a seat with 3 fouls after the first play in the second quarter. Bouteille connected form downtown for the first score of the quarter, which gave the hosts a double-digit lead. Brian Conklin produced a nifty spin move for a layup and Carter sank a jumper as the Limoges doubled up UNICS, 24-12. Bouteille made it a 14-point advantage before Lasme scored twice to trim the gap. Despite a Limoges timeout, the momentum shifted to UNICS and Smith landed back-to-back triples to cap a 0-10 run. A three by Howard revived the hosts with a three. Howard and Andusic traded threes in the last minute of the half to make it 32-27 at the break.

Howard nailed his third three of the game for the first basket of the second half, but Smith scored on back-to-back possessions to bring UNICS within 4. The visitors kept it close and Lasme turned an offensive rebound into a layup for Andusic, which drew the visitors within 40-38 midway through the third quarter. Smith stole the ball and fed Melvin Ejim for a layup that tied the game at 44-44. Maurice Ndour’s slam gave UNICS its first lead, 45-46. Lydeka free throws and a Bouteille layup restored a Limoges advantage, but Ponkrashov tied it at 49-49 through three quarters. Ponkrashov nailed a triple early in the fourth quarter to put the visitors up 51-52. There were multiple lead changes, including on threes by Howard for the hosts and Trent Lockett by the visitors, which made it 57-58 midway through the quarter. After a three by Gibson was ruled to be after the shot-clock buzzer, Ejim hit a three at the other end for a 4-point UNICS edge. The nerves seemed to get the best of both teams in the closing minutes with UNICS players missing 3 consecutive free throws and Jaiteh missing a dunk. Lasme hit a foul-line jumper to make it 58-64 with 90 seconds remaining as the arena fell silent. A four-point play by Carter brought the crowd to its feet and Brian Conklin’s offensive rebound and 2 free throws made it a 1-point game with 30.6 seconds to play. The finish came down to free throws; Lasme’s put-back with 9 seconds left put UNICS up 66-69 and his steal sealed the victory.
