Watkins, Kaba lead ASVEL past Reggio Emilia

ASVEL Villeurbanne registered its first win in Group H by topping Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia 68-64 at the Astroballe on Wednesday. Both teams now have a 1-1 records in Group H. Darryl Watkins paced the winners with 15 points, Alpha Kaba added 13 and John Roberson 10 for ASVEL. Amedeo Della Valle led Reggio Emilia with 17 points, Manuchar Markoishvili scored 11 and Jalen Reynolds 10 for the visitors. The hosts led by 1 at halftime before Kaba, Watkins and A.J. Slaughter fueled a 13-0 run that gave ASVEL a double-digit margin, 51-38. A 1-11 run that Della Valle capped with a layup got Reggio Emilia within 65-62 in the final minute, but Roberson buried a step-back triple to seal the outcome.

Della Valle got Reggio Emilia going with a driving layup and got help from Reynolds and Chris Wright to give their team a 2-6 lead. Charles Kahudi followed a layup with a stop-and-pop jumper, but Reynolds dunked and Markoishvili added a triple for a 6-11 Reggio Emilia lead. Justin Harper answered from downtown and Kaba added an alley-oop slam, but Chris Wright and Leonardo Candi joined the three-point shootout to keep the guests ahead, 13-19, after 10 minutes. Slaughter stepped up with a driving layup, Kaba dunked again and Harper struck from beyond the arc for a 20-21 ASVEL deficit early in the second quarter. Roberson sank his first triple and Slaughter scored again, but Chris Wright and Della Valle kept Reggio Emilia in charge, 25-29. Watkins had a layup and a jumper in a 7-0 ASVEL run, but a tip-in by Julian Wright kept Reggio Emilia within 32-31 at halftime.

David Lighty scored down low and a three-point play by Watkins gave ASVEL a 37-31 lead. Pedro Llompart and Markoishvili stepped up for Reggio Emilia and a running layup by Della Valle tied the game again, 38-38. ASVEL improved its defense and got its big men involved, as Kaba and Watkins each scored 4 points in a 13-0 run that Slaughter capped with a three-pointer, which prompted Reggio Emilia to call timeout at 51-38. Della Valle hit free throws, Reynolds added a layup and Nevels struck from downtown to give the visitors hope at 52-45 after 30 minutes. Nevels bettered Kaba's put-back dunk with a layup-plus-foul early in the fourth quarter. Kaba insisted with a layup and Kahudi added a jumper to restore a double-digit ASVEL lead, 58-48, with over six minutes left. Reggio Emilia kept struggling to score and consecutive put-back layups by Kahudi and Watkins seemed to seal the outcome at 64-51. Markoishvili and Llompart struck from downtown, however, and a layup by Della Valle made it 65-62 with 36.2 seconds to go. However Roberson buried a critical three-pointer that allowed ASVEL to celebrate the win.

ASVEL Villeurbanne
"We scared ourselves in the end. We had a very comfortable lead in the last quarter, played a great second half and it is too bad at the end that we really relaxed and let them come back in the game. We made a couple of bad turnovers, but the most important thing tonight was to win so we are back in it and looking good. They play tough defense and are a defensive team. We had to be physical, not back down and our bigs really showed up today. We had a really good presence in the paint and in the end, it helped us have good balance."
MENETTI, MASSIMILIANO
Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia
"It was a tough game against a very good team. We did a very good job in the first two quarters when we controlled the rhythm and put ASVEL in trouble offensively. Unfortunately, like in all games until now, we had a bad shooting percentage in the paint and that does not give us the right confidence. The third quarter was the worst one for us, making mistakes and allowing ASVEL to get fast break opportunities. It was very good that, in the tough moments, when we were down by 13, the team remained calm and we got within 4 points; that is a very good difference. Once you cannot win, you have to take care of the point difference. So we play the last game of this round at home, so it was important that if we lost tonight, we did it by a few points."
