Miljan Pavkovic - Hemofarm Stada (photo hemofarm)Hemofarm Stada defeated Gran Canaria 2014 75-74 on Tuesday in the last game for both teams in the Eurocup this season. Hemofarm came back from a 14-26 deficit in the first half to win a game that could have gone Gran Canaria’s way if Taurean Green had hit his last-second three-point attempt. Miljan Pavkovic paced the winners with 16 points while also dishing out 6 assists Bojan Krstovic added 12 points to go with 7 rebounds and Milos Borisov scored 10 points. For Gran Canaria, Jaycee Carroll led all scorers with 17 points and Spencer Nelson tallied 15 plus 7 rebounds, while Green recorded 13 points.

Hemofarm went inside early to big man Jerome Jordan, but Gran Canaria displayed defensive alertness and ran the floor well in transition. The visiting team flashed its speed with Green fast-break buckets before Nelson hit the first triple of the game and Javier Beiran added another to bookend a Jordan dunk and make it 11-13. With Michael Bramos joining the three-point club at the end of the opening quarter, the visitors celebrated a 14-20 advantage after 10 minutes. With Hemofarm unable to hit from beyond the arc to complement Jordan’s inside presence, Gran Canaria saw Carroll get going in the second quarter with consecutive three-pointers that gave his team its biggest advantage at that point: 14-26. But Pavkovic worked to control the tempo for the home side, involving Krstovic and Milivoje Bozovic before the half was reached, and swishing his own long-range bomb for a 29-34 score. Hemofarm stayed aggressive by getting to the line and controlled the boards the rest of the quarter. Gran Canaria struggled to hit from the perimeter and halftime arrived at a minimal margin of 33-34 for the visitors.

Carroll drilled another triple to start third quarter, but Jordan answered with a dunk and Bozovic scored on a layup before Hemofarm grabbed the lead with a Savovic three-pointer that made it 40-37. With good ball movement, some improved shot selection and a couple of baskets by Mladen Jeremic, the hosts stayed in the driver’s seat throughout the quarter, punctuating a 7-0 spurt with another Jordan slam. Young forward Samuel Dominguez saw some action for the visiting side and contributed with a couple of baskets inside, but Hemofarm stayed in front 53-49 as the quarter expired. Danilo Andusic swished a three and Pavkovic banked in a layup for his 10th point and a 63-55 Hemofarm lead midway through the closing quarter. Dominguez flashed some back-to-the-basket skills with a bank-in hook-shot that made it a two-possession game, as Gran Canaria jumped the lanes on defense and tried to quicken the pace. But Krstovic finally reached double-digit scoring numbers with a beyond-the-arc make and Pavkovic dropped another layup for a 71-65 advantage with less than two minutes left in the game. Granca never quit and after cutting the gap to 75-74 with 18 seconds remaining, the visitors stole the ball and got Green the ball for a potential game-winner from downtown at the buzzer, but he missed and the hosts celebrated their final Eurocup victory of the season.

Hemofarm Stada
"In games like this without importance for the competition, it is very hard to motivate players. This is the reason both teams played with lots of ups and downs. We had many problems because our big men except Milivoje Bozovic were out of shape. We are all sad because the game was not decisive for the quarterfinals. Hemofarm missed chances for that before, but I feel that reaching the Last 16 is a real success."
MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Gran Canaria 2014
“It was a very tough game tonight. We wanted to win even though the game had no competitive importance. We struggled hard, but could not capitalize on our good defense. The last 18 seconds were the key, we failed to make the game-winning shot and the price we had to pay was a loss.”
