Demond Mallet made himself comfortable in Germany on Tuesday, scoring a ULEB Cup career-high 27 points to keep DKV Joventut undefeated with a 65-80 road win at Alba Berlin. Mallet, a three-time German-League all-star, who played his entire professional career in Germany before this year, drilled 7 three-pointers and matched his best with 5 steals to help Joventut improve to 6-0 and keep infront of second place Turk Telekom. Meanwhile Berlin, coming off an already classic five-overtime victory over KK Bosna last week, falls to 3-3, but remains in third place. Mallet was hot from the onset, pushing Joventut to an early 14-21 lead. The advantage was only 10 at halftime, but Joventut stormed out to a 36-54 lead early in the third quarter to basically wrap things up. Rudy Fernandez finished with 12 points and 6 assists for Joventut and Lubos Barton and Jan-Hendrick Jagla added 11 points apiece. Bobby Brown paced Berlin with 23, Dijon Thompson posted 14 points and 9 rebounds and Goran Nikolic added 12.

Barton and Mallet hit from outside to give Joventut an early 2-6 lead. Brown answered with a drive, then dished to Patrick Femerling and soon added a triple to put his team ahead 12-10, but a red-hot Mallet hit two more triples and set up Ferran Lavina, who made it 14-21. Thompson and Barton made it 16-23 at the end of the first quarter. Joventut established its inside game in the second period as Lonny Baxter and Jerome Moiso extended the lead to 20-30. When Goran Nikolic and Aleksandar Rasic cut the score to 26-30, Joventut head coach Aito Garcia Reneses decided to go to Demond Mallet again, who instantly with two triples, a steal and a fast break took the game under his control again, as the visitors finished the half ahead 32-42. Berlin still struggled after the break, while Joventut again used the superiority of its frontcourt to find easy points and take a 36-54 lead. Brown and Mladen Pantic finished the drought for Alba, but Joventut with Fernandez, Mallet and Petar Popovic, had several answers to maintain a 46-62 at the end of the third quarter. Mallet’s sixth triple early in the fourth quarter marked Joventut's biggest lead, 48-67. Thompson and Brown were able to make the result a little more comfortable for the hosts, but the game was never again in doubt.

Head Coaches

PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"This game is easy to comment. Joventut is the better team and today they played a better game and they won in a very clear way. Our goal is to play against better teams and win these games. But in this game my team did not show up in the right way. We did not have enough aggressiveness and energy. I won't say that even with this attitude we would have won, but we have to be with them on every occasion and especially when we play an excellent team like Joventut."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut Badalona
"This was supposed to be a difficult game for us, because Alba played well so far in the ULEB Cup. We came here without Ricky Rubio and we did not know that Alba was going to play without Julius Jenkins. Obviously Alba had more problems without Jenkins than we did without Ricky. The main difference was in the 3-point percentage. Our better shooting allowed us to end the game without difficulties."

Players

BROWN, BOBBY
Alba Berlin
"Julius is a big part of our team and we needed him tonight, we needed his scoring and his defense. But we had to play without him and we started off flat, not hitting our shots and not playing defense. When they hit their big shots, it was hard to come back. We fought hard and tried to win, but the game got out of our hands."
MALLET, DEMOND
DKV Joventut Badalona
"This was a good win for us and it was the result of a total team effort. We needed this win to get a good standing for the next round. We knew that Berlin was missing, without Julius Jenkins, a big part of their scoring attack and we took advantage of that a lot, but overall we won because of our big team effort."
