Besiktas Cola Turka took a huge step towards winning Group B in the ULEB Cup by escaping from a possible surprise at home and beating BK Ventspils of Latvia 84-77 in overtime. The home team remained undefeated, while opening a two-game lead over its closest rival, Ventspils, which is 4-2 with both losses coming at the hands of Besiktas. Next up for Besiktas is a trip to Germany to fact Koln 99ers, while Ventspils hosts Portuguese champion Ovarense Aerosoles. Preston Shumpert and Kaya Peker paced Besiktas in a big second quarter to take a 41-29 halftime lead. But Jimmy Baxter sounded the charge for Ventsils, which scored 13 unanswered points to get right back in the third quarter. It came down to the final seconds, when Sandro Nicevic missed a chance to win it and the game went to overtime. But Peker and Nicevic were too strong in the extra period and Besiktas earned the win. Peker paced Besiktas with 25 points and 10 rebounds, Shumpert added 23 and Nicevic had 14. Akin Akinbala had a career night with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks, Uvis Helmanis posted 18, Baxter 14 and Aigars Vitols scored 12 and dished 5 assists.

Ventspils got off to a good start with Vitols and Helmanis scoring. Helmanis drilled back-to-back three pointers in third minute to give the visitors an 8-12 lead. Peker then stepped up with 6 points to tie the game at 14-14. Besiktas then scored 8 straight points to make on the way to a 24-21 lead at the end of the first quarter. The hosts strengthened their defensive pressure and used the resulting Ventspils turnovers to increase the lead. Shumpert matched Peker inside and outside as Besiktas went 14 points ahead before a Baxter layup made it 41-29 at halftime. Baxter continued to score at the beginning of the second half, too. He had 5 points before Akingbala and Helmanis completed a 0-13 surge to take the lead. Besiktas scored its first basket of the second half five minutes into the third period, but went ahead 53-51 by the end of the third quarter. It was a tough fourth quarter, as both sides tried to get ahead. Justin Love’s layup-plus-free throw put Ventspils on top before Shumpert tied it again with 100 seconds remaining. Ventspils missed a great chance to regain the lead and then Nicevic missed a last-second jumper for Besiktas as the game went into overtime tied 65-65. Besiktas used its home-court advantage and the experience in the extra period, forcing Ventspils into mistakes, while taking a 6-point advantage through Peker and Nicevic inside, en route to a big win.

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Besiktas Cola Turka
"We were expecting a tough game and we found what we felt. Ventspils is a very good team which have excellent weapons in offense like Akin Akingbala and Jimmy Baxter. Uvis Helmanis also did great job to make trouble for us especially with the efforts outside. It's not good to suffer a kind of 0-13 run in your home court when you have a 5-0 record to dominate your group. But the good thing is that we were able to control the critical minutes of the game, including the overtime. Rick Apodaca is just back from injury and he needs time, too. Of course it's good to keep on winning in our group, which we are targeting to finish on the top."
OKORN, GASPER
Ventspils
"We are not satisfied at the end of the game because we lost it. It doesn't matter because Besiktas Cola Turka is on top of the group without any loss. We came here to make a surprise. We played too soft in the paint especially in the first half. And we came out from the locker room to show something different in the second half. We had the game in our hands but weren't able to use our chance as good as we could have. Honestly to say, we lost the game not in overtime but in the last two minutes of the regular time. We missed three offenses to finish the game and we lost."

Players

SHUMPERT, PRESTON
Besiktas Cola Turka
"We played pretty good in the first half. Kaya Peker did a great job inside. We relaxed a little bit at the beginning of the second half and bring the opponent back in the game ourselves. But we fought back and tied the game before the end for the regular time and did the things better in the paint in the overtime and won. It's really good to remain unbeaten. That's the way it should be."
LOVE, JUSTIN
Ventspils
"Besiktas played a great first half but we brought the game back in the third quarter. They were impressive inside but in the second half, we played good defense, even went ahead. We executed our offense down the strech. Right now we are in the second position in the group. We have some important games coming up. We have to play stronger in defense."
