Ratiopharm Ulm made its Eurocup debut one to remember by routing Le Mans Sarthe Basket 71-93 on the road. Allen Ray scored 14 of his 25 points in the first quarter as the visitors jumped out to a 21-32 lead and never looked back. It was 36-51 at halftime before Ray teamed with John Bryant and Keaton Nankivil as the leaders of a 2-18 charge to open the third quarter, which effectively ended the game. John Bryant finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Daniel Theiss added 12 points and Dane Watts had 11 for the victors. Terrell Everett paced the hosts with 14 points and 6 assists, Marcus Goree added 12 points, Carl Ona Embo had 11 and Travon Bryant 10 for Le Mans.

Ulm got the start it wanted as Ray scored off the opening tip and Watts delivered the fantasy masterpiece – offensive rebound, basket, foul drawn and free throw made – for a 0-5 lead. A.J Slaughter got Cholet on the scoreboard with a three-pointer and Travon Bryant added another to make it 6-7. Steven Esterkamp kept the hot shooting going with a triple before Ray scored twice to extend the Ulm edge to 6-14. Marcus Goree answered only to see a red-hot Ray respond each time. A Goree three made it 17-21, but Ray was there again. Esterkamp nailed another three and Ray reached 14 first quarter points with the last basket of the stanza to make it 21-32. Rudy Jomby started the second quarter with a basket-plus foul for the hosts, however Daniel Theis slammed for a 12-point Ulm lead. John Bryant’s tip in stretched the lead to 28-44 midway through the second quarter. Watts made it an 18-point game before Jomby made a pair of triples in the final minute of the half – sandwiched around another from Esterkamp – to close the difference to 36-51 at the break.

Ray picked up where he left off at the end of the first quarter and John Bryant stood tall with a three-pointer and a slam as Ulm went on a game-breaking 0-11 run to open the second half. Goree score Cholet’s first basket of the half after three-and-a-half minutes, but Ray followed with his first triple and Nankivil also got going as the Ulm lead swelled to 38-69. Carl Ona Embo made a three for the hosts and soon after added free throws. But even after a Everett three to close the quarter, it was 48-73. One Embo made it a 20-point game with his second three early in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as it got. Ulm received more offense from John Bryant and Ray in pushing back to 59-84 and coasted the rest of the way.

Head Coaches

SOUSA, JEAN MANUEL
Cholet Basket
"Yannis Morin's game has been encouraging. But except that, nothing good came out of this game. We let them play, we watched them play. From the moment we let them score 31 points in the first quarter, then the game was not done, but we didn’t come into the game with the good intentions and good attitude."
LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
Ratiopharm Ulm
"We were really excited to play the Eurocup, and we wanted to have a good start into the Eurocup campaign. We knew that Cholet Basket not only has great basketball traditions but also has a great team this year. So we did prepare well for this game."

Players

SLAUGHTER, AJ
Cholet Basket
"I think it all started in the first quarter. We came out and didn't play any defense and they got out to a big lead. We were never able to recover from it. I don't think that explains it (Rudy Gobert and Luc-Arthur Vebobe injuries) but of course they are important to our team and they definitely would have helped out if they were in there, but we can't have any excuses. We can't make excuses for this loss. We've got to come out and play better."
ESTERKAMP, STEVEN
Ratiopharm Ulm
"We were able to make shots tonight because of our defense was able to get stops and we were able to push it. The game is a lot easier when we make shots. On that aspect, they play hard, they competed the all time. They really fought the whole time but we were just able to get easy shots and open looks."
