Khimki pulls out road win in Ulm

Khimki Moscow Region got back to its winning ways by edging ratiopharm Ulm on the road 90-95 on Wednesday night. Khimki improved to 2-1 record in Group F, while Ulm remains winless with a 0-3 record. In a game that featured several big runs, Ulm used a 14-2 fourth-quarter charge to go in front, but Khimki's 2-13 dash turned the visitors' 5-point deficit into an 83-89 lead with 60 seconds to go. Alexey Shved netted 28 points on 6-of-15 three-point shooting to lead the winners. E.J. Rowland scored 11 of his 16 points in the last four minutes of the game, Sergey Monia added 11 points and Marko Todorovic had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in victory. Raymar Morgan had 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter for Ulm. DeSean Butler netted 20, and Taylor Braun had 15 in the losing effort.

Threes from Shved and Monia helped Khimki build 2-10 lead early on, before another three from Shved and baskets from Dmitry Sokolov fueled a 4-12 run, giving Khimki a 15-27 advantage after 10 minutes. But in the second quarter Butler got it going for the hosts, scoring 14 points in a span of less than three minutes, cutting the deficit to 31-33. Khimki remained in front until back-to-back threes from Braydon Hobbs and Karsten Tadda gave the hosts a 49-48 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Shved was the main protagonist as Khimki went up again 54-63, but Braun scored 8 points the rest of the third quarter, helping cut it to 65-68 going into the fourth. Khimki increased the lead to 7 points, but Ulm rallied once again, this time putting together a run in which Morgan scored 8 points and Butler hit a pair of threes to give Ulm an 81-76 advantage midway through the fourth quarter. However Shved hit his sixth three to help tie it at 83-83. That's when Rowland stepped up by making a pair of baskets and then in a tandem with Todorovic forcing a turnover and racing for an easy dunk to make it 83-89 entering the final minute. With 40 seconds to go, Hummel scored a reverse layup-plus-foul to sealing the outcome.

"Congratulations to Khimki. We saw different quarters. We fell down quickly, because we were not present with rebounding – we gave them 10 offensive boards in the first quarter. It was nice to have the high-scoring quarter to go into halftime with a lead. All in all the 12 turnovers in the second half were the key to the game, because Khimki could generate easy baskets."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Khimki Moscow Region
"It was a very tough game. We knew that Ulm is an excellent team in transition. I think they are one of the best teams in transition in Europe. I think the good ball pressure by Zaytsev and Rowland was the key to the game. Alexey Shved played really intelligent. Everyone on the team gave 100% and it was a very important win for us."

Players

TADDA, KARSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
"We saw two different halves, where we had different problems. In the first 20 minutes we gave away 12 offensive rebounds and in the second half we turned the ball over 12 times. If we had reduced that, we had a chance to win. But anyhow we showed that we can play on this level with high caliber teams like Khimki."
HUMMEL, ROBBIE
Khimki Moscow Region
"The key tonight was our defense. At the end of the game we got the stops we wanted. Then E.J. Rowland kind of took over and hit some big shots. Compared to the game in Munich last week, this was a step in the right direction."
