FoxTown Cantu made it to the Eurocup Last 32 in Group A by downing Le Mans Sarthe Basket 88-86 in overtime at home on Wednesday. Cantu registered its seventh win in as many games, enough to get to the next round. It will clinch first place if it beats Telenet Ostend on the road next week. Le Mans dropped to 3-4 but still has chances to qualify. Joe Ragland paced the winners with 23 points. Pietro Aradori added 15, Maarten Leunen had 14, including a three-point shot that sent the game to overtime, and Michael Jenkins got 13 for Cantu. Vaughn Duggins led Le Mans with 16 points. JP Batista and DaShaun Wood each had 14, Charles Kahudi added 13 while Reyshawn Terry got 10 for the guests, which trailed 67-58 with 6 minutes left. Wood struck three times from downtown to give Le Mans a 74-77 lead. Leunen buried a triple and Terry could not score at the end of the regulation. It all came down to the final seconds of overtime, in which Ragland split free throws for an 88-86 Cantu edge. Le Mans had a chance to win the game but Duggins's three-point shot did not go in.

A jumper by Marco Cusin and a three-pointer by Leunen helped Cantu to get an early 7-2. Terry stepped up for Le Mans with a layup-plus-foul but four different Cantu players scored in an 8-0 run that made it a double-digit game, 15-5. Antoine Eito and Terry tried to change things for Le Mans but three-pointers by Ragland and Jenkins kept Cantu way ahead, 23-13, after 10 minutes. A jumper by Aradori and a third-chance basket by Adrien Uter soon made it a 13-point game, 30-17. Le Mans found a go-to guy in Duggins, who got help from Batista and Kahudi to bring the guests within 35-31. Cusin and Aradori allowed Cantu to stay ahead, 41-38, at halftime. Ragland took over after the break and a triple by Leunen restored a double-digit Cantu lead, 50-40. A three-pointer by Jenkins soon gave the hosts a 55-42 margin but a 0-7 run which Duggins capped with his own shot from downtown brought Le Mans within 55-49. Stefano Gentile and Leunen joined the three-point shootout for a 61-51 score after 30 minutes. Dounia Issa and Duggins shined early in the fourth quarter to give Le Mans hope at 61-56. It didn't last long, however, as Uter, Ragland and Aradori boosted Cantu's lead to 67-58 with 6 minutes left. It didn't last long, however, as Terry and Batista brought Le Mans back to life and back-to-back triple by DaShaun Wood completed the guests' comeback, 72-73, with 2 minutes left. Jenkins made free throws, a red hot Wood struck from downtown and Terry split foul shots for a 74-77 score. Leunen nailed a big triple to force overtime.

Jenkins and Ragland struck first in overtime but another triple by Wood and a jumper by Batista tied the game again, 82-82. Aradori split free throws and Ragland seemed to seal the outcome, 87-82. "We played a good game, specially because of our mental condition: we lead our group and we come from an important victory against Siena in the Italian League. The match was really tough and winning tonight was very important to increase our experience. The teams fought until the very end, and the result has been decided by a few details, like Maarten Leunen three-point shot at the end of regulation. We could have been more concrete in the second period, when we had the advantage, however, we are really happy because we put made an important step to try to finish our group in the first place."
JACKSON, JD
Le Mans Sarthe Basket
"We know that our qualification depends on the matches against Nymburk and Ostend, but winning tonight could have meant a bonus for us, not only for passing the round, but also for our self-confidence. We did a huge mistake in the last seconds of the fourth period, giving Leunen the space for a three-point shot: this is the key that could have changed the game. During the overtime, we didn't play bad, we took many open shots but also missed them. I'm frustrated because we had the chance to switch the situation, but we didn't manage to be successful."

"Tonight we reached a great success: the game was well balanced and we all had to fight for every ball. Le Mans never gave up and we lowered our intensity during the last period. However, we played a good overtime, changing the situation and winning a very important match."
