Bayern beats Lietkabelis, qualifies for quarterfinals

FC Bayern Munich became the first team to qualify for the 7DAYS EuroCup playoffs by downing Lietkabelis Panevezys 72-78 in Lithuania in Top 16 Group F on Wednesday. Bayern improved to 4-0 and sealed its ticket to the quarterfinals, while Lietkabelis dropped to 1-3. Bryce Taylor, Anton Gavel, Devin Booker and Nick Johnson led the winners with 12 points each. Ksistof Lavrinovic paced Lietkabelis with 12 points, Ben Madgen added 11 and Simas Galdikas had 10 for the hosts, who outrebounded Bayern 31-26. Bayern forced Lietkabelis into 22 turnovers, which was among the keys to the game. Gavel shined in crunch time, scoring the guests' final 5 points to send Bayern to the next round.

Vladimir Lucic and Reggie Redding got Bayern going early and Gavel soon gave his team a 2-6 lead. Madgen hit a triple and Mindaugas Lukauskis found his first points, but Danilo Barthel and Nick Johnson kept the guests in charge, 9-13. Ksistof Lavrinovic and Madgen fueled a 7-0 run that put Lietkabelis ahead 16-13. Madgen and Ksistof Lavrinovic kept pushing the hosts and a three-pointer by Tadas Rinkunas gave Lietkabelis a 26-20 edge after 10 minutes. Gavel and Nihad Djedovic stepped up for Bayern early in the second quarter, but Rinkunas kept Lietkabelis way ahead, 31-24. Bayern entered the foul bonus and used free throws to return to the game. Back-to-back layups by Redding and Booker tied it at 36-36. Ksistof Lavrinovic and Zygimantas Skucas made free throws, but Johnson beat the halftime buzzer with a triple that kept Bayern within 40-39 at the break. A layup-plus-foul by Galdikas boosted the hosts' lead to 45-42 soon after halftime. Bayern found a new go-to guy in Booker, who got help from Lucic to push the visitors in front 47-52. Galdikas made free throws and Rinkunas scored again, but Lietkabelis only managed to trade baskets now. Bayern improved its defense, while Maxi Kleber and Johnson fueled a 0-7 run, which Taylor capped with a three-pointer that made it a double-digit game, 53-63. Tarolis answered from downtown to keep Lietkabelis within 56-63 after 30 minutes. Galdikas and Tarolis kept stepping up for the hosts and free throws by Ksistof Lavrinovic brought Lietkabelis within 67-68 with six minutes left. Free throws by Skucas tied the game at 71-71, but Redding took over with a critical basket and Gavel buried a running jumper and added 3 of 4 free throws to seal the outcome.

"We fought hard till the end, but missed to many free throws and we turn the ball over 22 times. Also we were a little bit of unlucky because in the last minute, we missed 5 open shots. They play very aggressive defense, which forced our turnovers. We still have a chance to go to the playoffs, so we will try to fight till the end."
DJORDJEVIC, SASA

"Obviously every win is important, but this one was probably crucial .We knew that Lietkabelis is an extremely physical and experienced team. I was not happy with our defense in the first quarter. We are a good defensive team and we should start by playing good defense. But the next three quarters were better. We had some trouble against zone defense and that is why they came back. Experienced teams know how to play that kind of defense. They found a way to stop our ball movement. Once we understood we can have that extra pass, we came with good decisions and shot selections. We missed one big guy and we felt that today. We signed Maik Zirbes, but he is still injured. We are hoping that he can contribute to our team as well."
