Zvezda, Simonovic come back for thriller road win!

Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade was inspired by Marko Simonovic to claim its first victory of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season with a thrilling 83-85 road triumph at Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul on Friday. Simonovic came into the action from the bench with his team trailing heavily after a fast start from Galatasaray. The veteran immediately pulled his team back into the game on the way to a EuroLeague career-best total of 23 points. Stefan Jovic also excelled with 14 points and 9 assists, while Marko Guduric and Ognjen Kuzmic both added 11. Galatasaray had outstanding individual displays from Austin Daye, who had 24 points and 8 rebounds, and Alex Tyus, who combined 19 points with 4 blocked shots.

Galatasaray’s lightning start was propelled by Tyus and Goksenin Koksal, who scored 6 early points apiece as the home team took double-digit leads as high as 19-5. Simonovic’s entry made the difference, though, and Zvezda levelled the score 47-47 at the end of an exciting first half. Simonovic carried on dropping baskets and Zvezda moved 15 points ahead, but Daye blasted into action in amazing fashion with 15 points in just 3 minutes at the end of the third quarter. The teams traded baskets in a close final quarter, but Jovic’s steal layup gave Zvezda a lead in the final minute and the Serbian team held on.

Zvezda will face FC Barcelona Lassa at home in Round 3’s Game of the Week, while Galatasaray goes on the road to take on Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv.

ATAMAN, ERGIN

"We are continuing to have ups and downs during the game. We started the game very well, but our defense went down when the starting five players got tired and Zvezda scored 30 points in the second quarter. We also started badly in the third quarter. We only started playing defense again after 50-65 and found open shots. We got a four-point difference but we lost dramatically. If we had found a basket on the last four shots, we could have won the game, but we didn't. Congratulations to Crvena Zvezda for the win."
RADONJIC, DEJAN
Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade
"We played very bad in the beginning, and especially defensively, where we allowed 30 points in the first quarter. That alone says enough. We realized we need to play better defense by making better and more reasonable decisions. When we started doing that, things started going our way, and it was seen in the score line. However, Galatasaray took control again in the third quarter, they had terrific ball movement, and they got back into the game. But we were the ones who found a way to win this game. I am very happy we did it, and I congratulate my players for that."

DENTMON, JUSTIN

“we’ve got to be tougher mentally on offense and defense. We’ve got to be smarter with our fouls. We’ve just got to be a veteran team which knows how to win at the end of the game.”
SIMONOVIC, MARKO
Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade
“It was a big win for us. We played very well, even though we didn’t start in a good way we came back in the second quarter. In the third quarter we were winning by 15 points and we played strong defense. Galatasaray came back but it was a good end for Zvezda. It was a great atmosphere and a great game. We deserved to win.”
