Upshaw, Shurna lead Andorra to first win

Morabanc Andorra registered its first win in the 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season this season by thrashing Germani Brescia Leonessa 110-91 at home on Wednesday. Andorra improved to 1-1 while Brescia dropped to 0-2. Reggie Upshaw paced the winners with 29 points, David Jelinek added 20, John Shurna 17 and Oliver Stevic 12, while Andrew Albicy dished 9 assists for Andorra. Bryon Allen led Brescia with 20 points, Marco Ceron scored 17, Jordan Hamilton 15, Brian Sacchetti 12 and Awudu Abass 11.

Albicy had 2 steals and 3 assists in Andorra's 7-0 opening run. He got plenty of help from Michele Vitali and Moussa Diagne to keep the hosts ahead, 23-19, after 10 minutes. Brescia found a go-to guy in Ceron, who followed a layup with back-to-back triples to give the guests their first lead, 27-30. A 7-0 run that Rafa Luz capped with a coast-to-coast layup gave Andorra a 47-43 edge at halftime. Free throws by Erik Mika helped Brescia tie the game at 56-56 late in the third quarter. Andorra found a new go-to guy in Upshaw, who had 12 points in the next five minutes, including back-to-back triples that gave the hosts a 75-67 margin after 30 minutes. Shayne Whittington and Shurna fueled an 11-1 run that sealed the outcome, 86-68, as Brescia never recovered.

Pivotal perfomer

With the game tied at 56-56, Upshaw took over late in the third quarter with a floater, a big dunk off a steal, a put-back reverse layup and a couple of three-pointers. He helped Andorra lead 75-67 after 30 minutes and the hosts never looked back after that.

Stellar stat

Andorra made 27 of 34 two-point shots, an impressive 79.4%. It is the eighth-best two-point shooting percentage in EuroCup history and the best in more than four years, since Khimki Moscow Region hit 81.3% of its two-point shots against CEZ Basketball Nymburk on January 29, 2014.

Game-changing moment

Andorra only allowed 1 point in the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter. Shurna, Whittington and Jelinek combined for 11 points in those minutes, allowing Andorra to take off.

Did you notice?

Andorra reached 100 points for the first time in club history, shattering its previous scoring record of 92 against Levallois Metropolitans on December 20, 2017.

Next game

Andorra travels to the Serbian capital to face Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on Wednesday, October 16 at 19:00 CET. Half an hour later, Brescia visits Galatasaray Istanbul.

"I think we didn't play a good first half from a defensive point of view and improved a lot in the second half. We made some stupid fouls that allowed them to score easy points from the free throw line, but we kept our energy until the end. I think it was a good score for us."
DIANA, ANDREA
Germani Brescia Leonessa
"Congratulations to Anbdorra because they played a great game, but I'm disappointed with our performance. When we played as a team and together, the score was tied. At the end of the game, especially protecting the paint, we didn’t follow the game plan and that's the point. People can think that the key was the three-point shots from Andorra, but the key was in the paint. They made 17 baskets in the paint in the 17 opportunities they had. If we play tighter we can compete against anybody."

Players

UPSHAW, REGGIE

"It was my teammates [who made the difference], really. They helped me and installed the confidence in me to take open shots and be aggressive. Coach did a great job feeding me the ball once I got hot. As much as this is a great game for me, it is a great game for the whole team."
