Timma's layup lifts Baskonia in Malaga

In a thriller that went down to the wire, Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz edged Unicaja Malaga 82-83 on the road on Thursday. Baskonia improved to 9-11 and sole possession of ninth place in the standings, while Unicaja dropped to 8-12. Janis Timma led the winners with 17 points, including the game-winning layup with 2.2 seconds left. Jayson Granger added 14 points and 8 assists, Toko Shengelia scored 13 and Rodrigue Beaubois had 10 for Baskonia. The hosts set a club record by making 17 three-pointers, which is just 2 off the competition’s single-game mark. While Baskonia made 50% of its shots from downtown, Unicaja made just 4 of 16 (25%). Nemanja Nedovic paced Unicaja with 19 points, Giorgi Shermadini added 12 and Ray McCallum 11 for the hosts.

Nedovic needed 6 seconds to score and soon added a triple for a 5-2 Unicaja lead. Kevin Jones scored down low, but McCallum followed an off-balance layup with a tip-in in a 6-0 run and Jeff Brooks added a jumper to give the hosts an 11-4 edge. Augustine scored twice around the basket in a 7-0 run that made it a double-digit game, 18-6. Patricio Garino and Johannes Voigtmann combined for 9 points in a 1-10 Baskonia run and Granger bettered Brooks's layup with a three-pointer to bring the guests within 21-19 after 10 minutes. Granger hit a baseline jumper and improved on Shermadini's layup with a triple to complete Baskonia's comeback, 23-24. Shengelia scored in penetration and a red-hot Granger buried consecutive three-pointers for a 25-32 Baskonia advantage. Shermadini and Carlos Suarez tried to change things for Unicaja, but three-pointers by Beaubois and Matt Janning kept Baskonia ahead, 39-41. Timma hit a triple and Luca Vildoza added a jumper, but McCallum and Nedovic kept the hosts close, 43-46, at halftime.

Voigtmann and McCallum exchanged three-pointers after the break, but Dragan Milosavljevic and Brooks brought Unicaja even closer, 50-51. Jones stepped up with a couple of three-pointers and fed Timma for an alley-oop slam and a 54-59 Baskonia lead. Baskonia found a new go-to guy in Timma, who buried two more three-pointers to make it 62-67. A jumper by Adam Waczynski fixed the score at 64-67 after 30 minutes. Beaubois buried Baskonia's 15th triple early in the fourth quarter, but Waczynski had 5 points in a 7-0 run that gave Unicaja a 71-70 edge. Beaubois scored in penetration and even after Alberto Diaz hit a couple of jumpers, Shengelia kept Baskonia ahead, 75-76. Timma buried a three-pointer only to see Nedovic scored twice around the basket. Voigtmann and Shengelia gave Baskonia a 79-83 edge in the final minute. Waczynski hit free throws and fed Diaz for a layup that tied the game at 83-83. Baskonia had a final chance to avoid overtime and Shengelia fed Timma for the game-winning layup with 2.2 seconds left. Milosavljevic missed from way downtown at the buzzer.

"It is obvious that everyone wants to win and play well. When you win or lose by one basket, you deserve to win as much as your opponent, and it was our turn to lose tonight. When you lose by such a narrow margin, small details always allow one of the two teams to win the game. If you win more quarters than your opponent, in the end, talent and the level of focus are the details that make the difference. If you see stats at first glance, we can see there is a huge difference in three-point shooting, 16% against 50%. Jayson [Granger] went on a shooting streak in the first half, scoring 14 points, the same he had at the end of the game. A lot of people will wonder how we didn't stop Jayson when we know him so well. When a player is hot, that confidence to take decisions, even to take long shots and hit them, makes him impossible to guard. We stopped him after that, but other players shot the ball with high percentages. We were afraid to play one-on-one defense and that allowed them to hit open three-point shots. We did not do well on defensive rebounds, getting only 16 and even when he outrebounded them, getting just 16 on our end stopped us from running the way we wanted. We also missed some comfortable shots which usually go in. We have to be able to play tougher and stop having so many ups and downs during the same game."

"It was a close game if you don't take into account the first five minutes of the game, in which Unicaja was playing very strong, with a lot of energy and good offensive rebounding. After that we came back, especially with Jayson [Granger], who led us back in this game. I am satisfied with how we played in the second half. We passed the ball really well and got open three-pointers. You can see we had good shooting percentages - 68% in two-pointers and 50% in three-pointers. We didn't make many turnovers; we had a few, but I think we played well. It is complicated to play defense against Unicaja because they have a lot of players who can score, but I believe we played correct defense. Against Unicaja and its coach, he gets the rebounds and not his players because anywhere he goes, his team is also the best offensive rebounder. I don't know what he tells them or how he does it, but it is always a big problem. It was a drama at the beginning of the game, but after that, rebounds were more balanced and this is why we have the feeling we rebounded more, but in the opening minutes, they missed shots, rebounded and scored. We stopped it after that and this is why we won. It is a long competition and we have to be patient and persevere. We come off a tough week in terms of results and we have to continue. I hope we reach Round 28 with our playoffs chances alive. I would sign for that right now. I hope it happens, but it will be difficult for everyone."

"It was definitely a really big win for us. We knew the importance of this game. We had some bad luck and made some bad decisions in the last minute of the game, but thankfully, we won it."
