Besiktas dominates late for road win in Riga

Besiktas Integral Forex Istanbul bested VEF Riga 64-76 on the road to keep at least a share of first place in Group D heading into the final game of the regular season. VEF led most of the game, but the visitors pieced together a 4-23 charge bridging the third and fourth quarters to take the lead for good. Besiktas improved to 7-2, while knocking VEF to 1-8. John Holland led the Besiktas attack with 18 points on 5-of-9 three-point shooting. The team as a whole shot 13 for 25 (52%) from behind the arc. Ryan Broekhoff added 17 points, Jajuan Johnson scored 15 and Dogan Senli 10. Gerald Robinson scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half for VEF. Ingus Jakovics added 14 points and Janis Timma 11 in defeat.

Robinson opened the scoring and then assisted to Timma for a triple and a 5-0 lead. Muratcan Guler struck from behind the arc for Besiktas’s first points, but Timma found Robinson for a layup and a 9-3 advantage. Jakovics and Holland traded triples. Johnson brought Besiktas within 14-11 with a three. VEF remained aggressive and Robinson boosted the difference to 7. Senli came alive with Besiktas’s next three baskets, but VEF matched him. Jakovics put the hosts up 8 before a triple by Johnson made it 25-20 after 10 minutes. Besiktas used a 0-7 run to tie the game at 27-27 on a Broekhoff three-pointer. VEF responded to regain the lead, but Besiktas matched nearly every basket. Robinson led VEF to a 41-34 halftime lead with points to close the half.

Holland and Hilton Armstrong rallied Besiktas with 8 straight points to take their first lead of the game, 42-44. Holland tied it before Armstrong put the visitors up with shots from the line. Bamba Fall tied it again before Jakovics put the hosts ahead and Timma buried a three to cap a 7-0 run. Holland twice brought Besiktas within 2. He sandwiched a pair of triples around another from Kenan Bajramovic. Engin Atsur free throws capped a 0-11 Besiktas surge to make it 53-59 through three quarters. Fall dunked, but Johnson scored the next 5 points to make it 55-64. Broekhoff added a triple to give Besiktas its first double-digit lead, 57-69. Senli’s steal and slam put the visitors up 14 before Aigars Skele drilled a three for VEF. Any doubt as to the outcome was cleared up when Holland and Johnson hit back-to-back threes to make it 60-76 with a minute to go as Besiktas rolled to a big win.

"In the first half we stuck to the game plan, but in the second half we relaxed and that's why we couldn't get back in the game. When you are playing too relaxed, sometimes it hurts, because you are not focused enough when you have to make key shots. So we lacked this part, because we got good looks, but we just couldn't knock them down. We were also changing our lineup a lot, because one of the goals in this game was to give playing time to guys like Janis Berzins and Aigars Skele who both have returned only recently. Now we have one game left in the Eurocup, so we have to prepare for it."

"In order to finish the group at least in second place, we had to win either this game or the next one. We knew that VEF Riga had no chance to make the second round. Because of that, I understand the coach of our opponent as it is harder to keep players to concentrate for such a game. We didn't bring Chris Lofton to this game and we used a bigger player rotation, so the opponent was taking advantage of that. In the second half we used our best players more and we started playing better, so in the end it was comfortable to finish the game. Before we started the Eurocup, our goal was to finish in first or second place. Therefore, I congratulate my players and I would also like to wish best of luck to VEF Riga in the future."
