Bayern needs overtime to edge Ulm and remain unbeaten

In an all-German showdown in Group F that went into overtime, FC Bayern Munich pulled off a thrilling 101-98 overtime win over ratiopharm Ulm. Bayern, which had previously clinched a spot in the quarterfinals, improved to 5-0 and sits atop the group standings. It will play for first place at Khimki Moscow Region next week. Ulm remained winless in Top 16 action. Neither team had a lead bigger than 7 points during the game and Ulm led 83-86 lead with 2.8 seconds left in regulation, but Bryce Taylor hit a buzzer-beating triple that sent the game into overtime, during which Reggie Redding stepped up to lift Bayern to victory. Devin Booker had 18 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists to lead Bayern, Taylor netted 17 points, Redding finished with 14 and Anton Gavel and Maximilian Kleber scored 10 apiece for the winners. DeSean Butler scored 19 for Ulm, Raymar Morgan had 16 points, Braydon Hobbs hit 4 of 5 threes for 12 points, and Augustine Rubit scored 11 in defeat.

Three early triples, two by Hobbs and one by Butler, helped Ulm take a 13-14 edge. Bayern had six different scorers in the first 10 minutes, but Rubit's three-point play helped Ulm take a 17-22 lead. Nick Johnson hit a triple for the hosts to end the first quarter, and Nihad Djedovic scored 5 points, including a triple to open the second stanza. Taylor put Bayern up 33-29, but the teams continued trading leads the rest of the half, and Bayern led 42-40 at halftime. Vladimir Lucic and Reggie Redding got Bayern to 52-45 early in the third, but back-to-back threes from Chris Babb and Hobbs helped Ulm get back in front, 52-53. The hosts led 63-61 going into the fourth, which is when Taylor hit a pair of triples and Kleber another to open a 74-66 margin. But Ulm hit right back with a 0-9 run, with Morgan scoring 6 points and Marcell Pongo nailing a three. Butler's triple gave Ulm an 80-81 edge and the teams were tied at 83-83 with 25 seconds to go in regulation. 19-year-old Till Pape scored a put-back-plus-foul with 2.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter that put Ulm in front. Bayern Coach Sasa Djordjevic called a timeout after which Taylor hit an off-balance triple at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, 86-86. The teams did not stop exchanging blows in the extra session either, but Redding came up big for the hosts, hitting a three-pointer to make it 93-91, and driving for a layup that made it 99-96 with 19 seconds remaining. Ulm failed to score on the next trip down the floor and Kleber sealed the win from the free throw line.

"Players showed character tonight. It was a great game. Ulm showed why they are in top place in the German League right now. They have a great game and great offensive systems, they take advantage of their qualities and they showed that tonight. We were up by 8 points in third quarter, which was due to our good defense. But Ulm believed in their game, and played really good, tough basketball. I am positively surprised by the quality of their young players Kraemer and Pongo, and how they played against us. It is a good sign to see young players play like that. Too bad they are wearing the wrong jersey. We did not react in a good way to Ulm's switching defense, and we were too anxious and did not find the right way to punish mismatches. We have to be smart and find easier ways to get to the basket. In the end, Pape making a free throw gave us a chance to call a timeout. We designed something and thankfully it went in. It was a good win at the end, in front of our fans, and it is even good to win games like this, in overtime. We have to learn, we have to have the hunger, humility to come back and pound the ball, practice hard and go for something that is ahead of us. Who knows if we are going to get it, but we have to give 100 percent on the effort. This was just one episode."

"It was a good game. I think that Bayern deserved this win, even though it was a close one and no one could have complained if we would have won this game. Once you are out of the competition, you can either accept losing or you can play with pride. Today we played with pride."
