Zenit St. Petersburg knocks Nizhny out

Zenit St. Petersburg eliminated Nizhny Novgorod from quarterfinal contention with a 90-66 victory on Wednesday. Zenit improved to 3-2 in Group G and visits Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius in Round 6 knowing it will advance to the quarterfinals with a victory. Nizhny fell to 1-4 and will finish its EuroCup season at home against Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem next week. Nizhny stayed close throughout the first half, but Zenit owned the third quarter, which it dominated 21-4, and never looked back. Evgeny Valiev paced Zenit with 17 points, Janis Timma scored 16, Sergey Karasev netted 15, Kyle Landry 11 and Stefan Markovic had 10 points and 13 assists, which helped Zenit tie its club record for assists with 32. DeAndre Kane flirted with a triple double for Nizhny and finished with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists, though he also committed 7 turnovers. Tomislav Zubcic added 15 points and Petr Gubanov had 13 in defeat.

Zenit stared strong to lead 9-4 after Valiev’s three-point play. Markovic boosted the margin to 7 before Nizhny rallied back to 16-14. Zubcic’s first three-pointer tied the game at 20-20 and his second made it 22-25. Sergey Karasev answered from downtown to even the game at 25-25. After Kane put the visitors up 29-32, Ryan Toolson scored 4 points in a 12-0 run that gave the home side control. Gubanov, Zubcic and Siim-Sander Vene all connected from downtown as Nizhny stormed back and tied the game at 47-47 on Gubanov free throws. Landry gave Zenit a 49-47 edge at halftime. Zenit started the second half on a 10-0 tear in which Landry scored half the points and Markovic delivered 2 assists. After a Gubanov triple, Zenit added 11 more unanswered points, of which Timma scored 5 and Markovic collected 2 more assists, to make it 70-50. Nikita Zverev split free throws for Nizhny to end the third quarter at 70-51. Kane helped Nizhny rally to within 14 early in the fourth quarter, but back-to-back threes by Toolson and Timma made it 79-59. The margin crept into the 20s in the closing minutes as Zenit cruised to victory.

"We avenged our loss in Nizhny Novgorod where we created problems for ourselves. Today we played with a big rotation in the first half and then in the second half the five that had the most impact played more and made the difference."
