Madrid eases past Maccabi to repeat ANGT Munich win

U18 Real Madrid eased past U18 Maccabi Teddy Tel Aviv 58-96 to win the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Munich for the second consecutive season and book its sixth straight ticket to the ANGT Finals. Usman Garuba led the way with 22 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists for the 2015 continental champion, which has won its last six qualifying tournaments dating back to 2013-14. Kareem Queeley added 15 points and 7 rebounds, Mario Nakic had 14 points and Amar Sylla chipped in 11 points for Madrid, which joins U18 Valencia Basket in the eight-team field at the ANGT Finals at the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Finals Four in Vitoria-Gasteiz in May. Valencia won the ANGT Valencia. After not competing in the ANGT last season, Maccabi finished second in Munich for its best result at a qualifying tournament. Maccabi missed a chance to return to the ANGT Finals for the first time since 2006-07. Deni Avdija collected 18 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists in the loss, Dori Sahar scored 15 and Raziel Hayun 13 points.

The game started with a Golden Dike dunk for Madrid, but Avdija streaked to a layup at the other end and Dori Sahar’s three-pointer was the first lead change, 9-6. Queeley, who was shadowing Avdija, answered with a three of his own to start a 2-8 spurt for an 11-14 Madrid lead. Hayun punched back with 2 three-pointers to nose Maccabi ahead 17-16, but Jorge Mejias hit a jumper just before the buzzer and Madrid led 17-18 after 10 minutes. Maccabi failed to score a basket in the first 2 minutes of the second quarter and Madrid extended its lead to 18-25. An Avdija three-pointer finished a 7-1 run as Maccabi got within 25-26. But Garuba took over with 6 straight points in helping Madrid gain control of the game with a 2-15 surge to lead 27-41. Maccabi was able to get back some of that deficit and trailed 32-43 at the break. The cushion was 37-47 when Madrid scored 13 straight points - with three-pointers from Garuba and Nakic - for a 37-60 advantage. Maccabi tried to cut into the deficit, but still trailed 48-70 after 30 minutes. Maccabi picked up the first 4 points of the final frame, but Madrid reeled off 11 of the next 13 points to decide it for good.
