Reyer to the quarterfinals

Umana Reyer Venice reached the 7DAYS EuroCup Quarterfinals for the first time in club history after beating fellow Italian side Germani Brescia Leonessa 88-93 on the road on Tuesday night. The win improved Reyer to 4-2 in Group F to finish in second place, which pits it against Unicaja Malaga in the quarterfinals. Brescia finished with a 2-4 record in the group and fourth place. Brescia was up early and led 41-35 late in the second quarter. But Reyer scored the last 10 points of the second quarter and stepped it up on defense to hold the hosts without a field goal for almost 10 minutes in the second half. Reyer used it to pull away to 56-72 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter and never allowed the hosts to threaten the rest of the way. Reyer's Stefano Tonut led all scorers with 20 points, while Andrea De Nicolao collected 16 points, 9 assists and 5 assists. Mitchell Watt scored 17 and Jeremy Chappell had 10 points and 7 assists in a victory. Travis Trice had 18 points in a loss. Awudu Abass scored 16, Tyler Cain had 14 points and Ken Horton finished with 10 in a losing effort.

The teams traded baskets early on with Abass hitting a pair of triples for the hosts and putting them in front 12-10. But De Nicolao answered with a three to spark a 0-11 run that Tonut capped with a driving layup. Watt's close-range basket stretched the lead to 13-23, but David Moss and Tommaso Laquintana hit jumpers in a 6-0 run before Brian Sacchetti nailed a triple to help close it to 24-25 after 10 minutes. Trice scored the first 6 points of the second quarter to put the hosts in front 30-25. Ike Udanoh snapped a 17-2 run and Tonut hit a transition triple for Reyer. Trice, Abass and Andrea Zerini each knocked down a three-pointer to put Brescia up 41-35, but Reyer finished the quarter with a 0-10 run, including triples from Tonut and De Nicolao to make it 41-45 at halftime.

Horton hit from long range for the hosts, but Watt answered from downtown before Tonut added to the tally. A triple from Valerio Mazzola extended the margin to 47-58. Reyer kept the hosts without a field goal for the final 8:25 of the third. Austin Daye hit a jumper to end the third and Andrew Goudelock scored a pair of baskets to open the fourth and make it 56-72. Trice gave Brescia hope with a triple, but Michael Bramos and Goudelock answered with three-pointers for Reyer. Sacchetti hit from downtown again and Brescia managed to lower the deficit, but Reyer remained firmly in control knowing that a win, but also a loss up to 7 points, was enough to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. Vitali, Trice and Cain got Brescia within 82-87 in the penultimate minute, but Brescia did not get closer than that.

Career-best for starting guards

Stefano Tonut and Andrea De Nicolao started in the Reyer backcourt and were essential for their team's success. Tonut scored 16 of his career-high 20 points in the first half, while De Nicolao had 16 points and 9 assists, both career-highs.

Defense steps up

In the third quarter Reyer allowed just one field goal, a Ken Horton triple that cut the score to 45-47 with 8:25 left in the quarter. In the remainder of the third Reyer did not allow a single field goal and kept Brescia without one for 9 minutes and 40 seconds bridging the third and fourth quarters.

Club record

Reyer tied a club scoring record with 93 points, a mark it set during the regular season in a win over Limoges CSP.

Road warriors

Reyer opened the season with a pair of losses, but has won 12 of its last 14 games. Reyer has also won six of its eight road games this season.

Mid-game news

Both teams learned favorable news early in the third quarter that Promitheas beat Oldenburg in the other game in this group, meaning Reyer could afford a 7-point loss in this game while Brescia need an 8-point win to go through.

Next up

Reyer now moves to its first-ever EuroCup Quarterfinals where it will face Group H winner Unicaja Malaga, which is undefeated at home and willl have the homecourt advantage in their best-of-three series. For Brescia, this marks the end of its EuroCup campaign.

Head Coaches

ESPOSITO, VINCENZO
Germani Brescia Leonessa
"Congratulations to Venice for moving ahead in the EuroCup; they deserved it because they played better than us. Our game was far too inconsistent, especially in defense. I'm pretty happy about how we played in offense, but have to play better in defense for 40 minutes with the right effort and right attitude for the whole game."
DE RAFFAELE, WALTER
Umana Reyer Venice
"I think the key was that we really control things on the court. It was not an easy game, not what we were used to offensively and defensively. We are really happy because this is another first for our club, another historic result for us. It is an unreal situation, but I am very happy for my players because in this tough period they answered every time as big players and persons."

Players

SACCHETTI, BRIAN
Germani Brescia Leonessa
"We are sorry for the loss, for playing the game without our fans and to leave the EuroCup with a loss. We have to respect what the court said and congratulations to Venice, which deserved to win. We honored the competition until the end and we took a big step forward compared to last year. We have to be proud and satisfied with our journey even if we are disappointed for tonight: we look to the future with confidence."
TONUT, STEFANO
Umana Reyer Venice
"It is a very good period for our club, but it is not easy for anybody to play like this, without fans. We played a tough game, we remained focused the entire game and got this win that is very important for our club and for us."
