Eliyahu stars as Jerusalem beats Nizhny to win Group G

Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem clinched first place in Group G and home-court advantage in the quarterfinals thanks a 73-81 victory over Nizhny Novgorod at CEC Nagorny on Wednesday. Jerusalem improved to a 5-1 Top 16 record to win the group, while Nizhny bowed out of the EruoCup with a 1-5 mark in this stage of the competition. Lior Eliyahu led the Jerusalem attack with 20 points and 7 rebounds in 19 minutes, Amar’e Stoudemire tallied 19 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks and Curtis Jerrells added 15 points and 6 assists for the winners. Jerusalem managed to overcome poor three-point shooting (4 of 19; 21.1%) and 23 turnovers by dominating the rebounding battle 24-47 and controlling the paint. DeAndre Kane and Kenny Boynton paced Nizhny with 18 points each and Tomislav Zubcic and Siim-Sander Vene added 14 points apiece. Nizhny led 39-36 at halftime, but Jerusalem used runs of 0-11 in the third quarters and 0-10 in the fourth to pull away for the win.

After the hosts scored the game’s first 5 points, Stoudemire netted 5 in a 0-7 Jerusalem run. Boynton twice put Nizhny back ahead and twice Jerusalem regained the lead. Ilya Popov free throws knotted the score at 16-16 after 10 minutes. The teams continued to trade points into the second quarter, with threes by Kane and Vene giving Nizhny the edge. Jerusalem came back to tie it at 30-30 on an Eliyahu floater midway through the quarter. Brian Randle, in his first appearance of the season, made in impressive block on defense and – after a timeout – scored his first points to put the visitors ahead. A Boynton triple gave Nizhny a 39-36 halftime lead. A go-ahead three by Jerrells highlighted a 0-11 Jerusalem run that saw the visitors claim a 44-51 lead. Zubcic split free throws to end the Nizhny drought, but the hosts did not get closer than 4 before the third quarter ended at 51-58. Shawn Jones’s alley-oop plus foul to start the fourth quarter established the first double-digit lead of the game, but back-to-back threes by Zubcic and Boynton drew Nizhny to within 57-61. However Jerusalem pulled away again as Eliyahu scored three times in a 0-10 push and the visitors cruised the rest of the way.

"I would like to thank my players who were on the court tonight. We have a lot of injured guys and those who still can play fought for the whole team. I think we could have won this game despite all the troubles. We missed concentration in some episodes and lost in the little details, especially in the second quarter. Still it was great experience for the whole team, especially for the young guys."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem
"The result of the game with Nizhny Novgorod was very important for us as we wanted to take first place in the group. Before the match we knew that we needed to control the number of our mistakes, as we are very tired now. Despite the fact that Nizhny Novgorod has a lot of injured players, it’s still a team that can score a lot of points. That’s why we tried to be very attentive in defense and take control over the game. We wanted to show calm and mature basketball, but still we’d done a lot of work before this game to take first place."

Players

POPOV, ILYA

"We really wanted to win. That’s why we played such a competitive game without our leaders who are injured now. Unfortunately we couldn’t advance to the playoffs, but still we are proud that we were a part of the EuroCup season. "
STOUDEMIRE, AMAR'E
Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem
"Tonight was a great game, very competitive. We played good in both halves; we were focused enough to get the win. The guys from Nizhny played extremely hard. I would like to give my respect to them."
