Shved powers Khimki to slump-busting win over Real

Alexey Shved shined as Khimki Moscow Region blasted Real Madrid 102-94 Thursday night at Arena Mytishchi. The guard roared for 21 points on 5-of-7 three-point shooting and a career-high 13 assists to lead six Khimki scorers in double figures. Khimki, which led by as many as 24 points before allowing Real to rally late, snapped a four-game losing streak and improved its record to 9-11. Real, which saw its 13-game winning streak ended on Tuesday against CSKA, lost for a second time in three days in Moscow to fall to 15-5. Devin Booker scored 15 for Khimki before leaving late in the third quarter with a knee injury. Anthony Gill and Janis Timma added 13 points apiece, Jonas Jerebko had 11 and Sergey Karasev 10. Former Khimki center Jordan Mickey led Real with a season-high 20 points, Fabien Causeur scored 17 and Trey Thompkins and Facundo Campazzo added 10 each.

Thompkins opened the scoring for the visitors before Booker thrilled the local fans with a monster slam. Jeffery Taylor's strong defense had held Shved without a shot in the first few minutes, but the Khimki star had already racked up 3 assists. Then his first shot was a three-pointer that gave Khimki its first lead, 11-9. The lead grew to 17-11 thanks to a triple by Vyacheslav Zayttsev and Jerebko's fastbreak finish over Walter Tavares. After a Real timeout, Thompkins and Taylor drained three-pointers to trim the gap, however, a triple by Timma in the closing seconds gave Khimki a 25-21 edge after 10 minutes. Jeremy Evans came off the bench to lift the Khimki lead to 8, but Causeur gave Real a charge, too. A three by Causeur drew the visitors within 38-35 midway through the second quarter. Causeur narrowed the gap to 1 with his 9th point of the quarter only to see Khimki answer with 9 straight points, including a steal and pull-up three by Shved, to surge to 52-42. After a Real timeout, Causeur ended his team's slide, however, a three-point play by Booker extend the Khimki margin to 55-44 at the break.

Jerebko started the scoring in the second half, but Real answered quickly. Tavares stood tall for the visitors, but Booker and Shved kept Khimki in total control. Shved's fifth triple of the game made it 67-54 midway through the third quarter. Mickey heated up for Real to bring the visitors within 8. Gabriel Deck collided with Booker and the Khimki big man had to be helped off the floor. Mickey made it 75-67 with a three-pointer, but Shved dunked in the final seconds of the third quarter to make it 80-69. Karasev opened the fourth with a three and soon Stefan Jovic added another. A layup and shot-clock beating three by Karasev completed a 13-0 start to the quarter and pushed the lead into the 20s. Taylor ended the Real drought after 4 minutes with a three and Mickey got going, but the visitors were running out of time. Shved's career-best 13th assist came on a Jovic triple that took the hosts to triple digits, 100-80, as Khimki cruised to an impressive victory.

Superstar performance

Alexey Shved was at his best with 21 points and a career-high 13 assists. He did not miss on two-point shots and was 5 for 7 from downtown. Shved also tallied 5 rebounds and 1 steal in amassing a performance index rating of 31. He had been on the floor for less than 20 minutes when we reached a double-double with his 10th assist early in the third quarter.

Unsung heroes

Khimki used a tremendous defensive effort with several unsung heroes. Sergey Karasev was one of them with 10 points on near-perfect shooting, 2 assists and 4 fouls in 16 minutes. Jeremy Evans was another with 9 points – including a pair of big dunks, 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal in 19 minutes. Their non-stop energy off the bench played a vital role in the win.

Rebounding king once more

One day after losing his crown as the EuroLeague's career rebounding king to Paulius Jankunas of Zalgiris Kaunas, Felipe Reyes is back on top. He collected 2 boards to leapfrog Jankunas and now stands tall with 1,784 career rebounds. Of course, it could change again on Friday when Jankunas plays next.

What's next?

Khimki will be back in action on Thursday, January 23 when it visits KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz. Real plays the following evening when it hosts top-of-the-table Anadolu Efes Istanbul.

"It was for sure a very important game for us because we lost a couple of games. And for sure to win against such a big team as Real Madrid is a big success. So first I want to say congratulations to our guys and a big thank you because we showed a lot of energy and the maximum effort that we could and we got the victory. Maybe the result is really big because we played three and a half quarters of really good defense and to play against such a tall and strong team is not easy, but we were good today."
LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid

"I think in the first half we made a lot of mistakes, rebounding and turnovers. That gave them a lot of opportunities and I think in the first half we were all the time behind them. When you watch all the stats, probably it was a great game for them. They had very good percentages, they had open jumpers. In those situations, it is hard to say because they deserve a lot of credit because they played a very good game. They passed the ball very well, that leads to open jumpers, so they really had control of the game. For us, it was not our best game. We fought until the end, but somehow we were always behind them.

“I think our third quarter was kind of solid, but we were not getting into a rhythm. We missed open jumpers that could have gotten us back into the game and I think that that got into our heads and in that moment [early in the fourth quarter] we made bad decisions defensively and offensively and they broke open the game. So give them credit for what they did. I congratulate Khimki. We know how hard the EuroLeague is with this calendar and the schedule and if you want to win here, you have to a lot of things well and I think we didn't do that."

"The atmosphere was great tonight. I think we played with a lot of chemistry tonight and got some big-time stops. They missed some shots, we made some shots and came out to win. [About his injury] It was just knee-to-knee, I got hit on the inside of my knee. It's nothing serious. I'll be okay."
SHVED, ALEXEY
Khimki Moscow Region
"We played great. It was a different game than what we've played before. The last two games at home we lost and we just want to be better. Today we showed that we can beat big teams. We played nice, all together, and we're looking forward to the next game. I think we played better defense. In the last 5 minutes, we probably didn't push ourselves hard because the difference was big, but we need to play to the end. We cannot play easier. It was a great game."
MICKEY, JORDAN
Real Madrid
"We just made a lot of mental mistakes today. We didn't play like ourselves. We'll be fine. We just have to get back to the drawing board and we'll be ready for the next game. It's more mental than physical. We've been playing this game our whole lives. We just have to stick with the mental part and remember things and not make mental mistakes. We just have to go back to practice and work hard. It's a position we've been in before and I think we'll be okay. I don't think we're at our best. We still have a ways to go still. We just hit the midway points [of the season] not too long ago so we still have a lot of growing to do and I think we'll be fine."
