Already-eliminated Belgacom Spirou Charleroi stunned Bilbao Basket 79-73 for its first win of the season on Tuesday. Loss sent Bilbao into its fourth consecutive defeat, and 4-4 record in Group B. After a triple from Demond Mallet midway through the third quarter, Belgacom Spirou pulled away to 54-44, its biggest lead of the night, but the visitors rallied, tying the game three times in the fourth. A triple from German Gabriel made it 73-73 with little over 90 seconds to go, but Darryl Watkins and Demond Mallet went perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line for the hosts to claim victory. Mallet led the hosts with 19 points, and Watkins had 18 points plus 9 rebounds. Joseph Trapani collected 14 points plus 8 rebound, and Devin Green 12 points plus 9 rebounds. Dairis Bertans netted 16 for Bilbao, and German Gabriel scored 13 in defeat.

With a dunk from Trapani and a triple from Mallet, the hosts took 8-2 lead, but baskets from Antanas Kavaliauskas, a triple from Raul Lopez, and a triple-plus-foul from Fran Pilepic helped made it 10-14. Mohamed Abukar answered with a triple, as the hosts took over the lead, and Mallet’s layup at the end of the first, and Trapani’s basket-plus-foul at the start of the second made it 23-16. But Bertans hit a three-pointer to start 0-9 run, capped with a layup from Damir Markota. Teams continued trading slim leads. Justin Hamilton and Mallet nailed back-to-back shots behind the arc for 34-30, and after Lopez and Gabriel scored for Bilbao, Abukar helped the hosts to 39-36 halftime lead. With baskets from Devin Green and Watkins, Spirou pulled away to 45-36 at the start of the third quarter, and after a triple from Bertans, Spirou increased it to 54-44 through Watkins, Trapani and a triple from Mallet. Bilbao stayed in range with 6 points from Gabriel, and Markota beat the buzzer with a layup for 65-59 after three quarters. Markota opened the fourth quarter with a jumper, and Bertans tied it at 65-65. Back-to-back dunks from Watkins gave the hosts 71-67, but Zoran Vrkic and Gabriel hit back-to-back three-pointers for 73-73 with less than 2 minutes to go. However, in the remaining time Gabriel and Bertans missed five times from long range, while Watkins and Mallet went perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final 30 seconds for the hosts to win the game.

"Our team did not go out there to give 100%, thinking it would be an easy game - and we know that we cannot beat anybody when we don't give 100%. It was a game clearly dominated by Spirou and I give them a lot of credite for this win. They dominated every aspect of the game, giving us a lot of problems with their zone defense. We were not able to stop their productive offense, too. Spirou felt really comfortable, getting big leads, and dominated both boards."
