CAI Zaragoza overcame a slow start and rallied from an early 13-point deficit to beat Telekom Baskets Bonn 71-60 on Wednesday night. Zaragoza now improves to 5-3 in at least the sole possession of third place in Group D, and thanks to this 11-point victory, it holds a head-to-head tiebreaker over Bonn which dropped to 4-4 in the fourth place of the standings. Led by Tony Gaffney, Bonn tok 4-17 lead early on but Zaragoza caught up in the second quarter. Teams exchanged leads until the fourth quarter when the hosts used a 12-0 run to pull away, and make sure they win by more than 4 points, margin Bonn won the first head-to-head match. Georgi Shermadini pced Zaragoza with 14 points plus 7 rebounds. Jon Stefansson netted 12, Michael Roll scored 11, while Viktor Sanikidze collected 10 points plus 12 rebounds in victory. Ryan Brooks scored 18 for the visitors, Jamel McLean added 15, while Gaffney finished with 12.

Gaffney scored 10 points and had a pair of steals, while McLean contributed with couple of baskets, before Benas Veikalas sunk a triple for Bonn to open the game with 4-17 lead. Joseph Jones got Zaragoza going, as the hosts cut it to 10-20 after the first quarter, and Pedro Llompart and Stefansson cut it to 18-22 early in the second. Jonathan Tabu and Stefansson hit triples for Zaragoza, but Brooks kept Bonn with 27-30 halftime lead. In the third, McLean and Andrej Mangold with a three-pointer opened up 29-38 margin, however Damjan Rudez nailed a jumper to spark big Zaragoza run. Michael Roll had a three-pointer and a basket-plus-foul for 39-38, and Rudez hit a triple for 45-40 late in the third quarter. Brooks triple helped Bonn stay within 47-43 after 30 minutes, and Veikalas scored from downtown to put the visitors up 49-51 in the fourth. But Sanikidze tied it with a put-back dunk, then Stefansson and Sanikidze nailed back-to-back triples for 57-51 midway through the fourth quarter. Another jumper from Stefansson capped a 12-0 run for 61-51. After Brooks ended Bonn's drought, Shermadini scored 5 points, including a layup-plus-foul for 66-53, putting the game out of reach. Brooks and McLean tried to get Bonn within a shot of getting to a 4-point deficit, margin that Bonn won the first head-to-head match, but Zaragoza hit enough foul shots to avoid any drama at the end.

"We had a cold start, without the toughness required in this kind of game; we had talked about it as if it was a final for us. We had a cold start, with little intensity on defense, which led us to make mistakes on offense. We had a lot of problems to stop their transition game, especially Gaffney. We recovered in the second quarter and the third one was the key. Shots went in - from players who needed to score three-point shots - and from that moment, we started to break the game, scoring baskets, but without too much control. We played with our hearts more than with our heads. In games like this, with so much pressure, knowing that it was key for both teams, sometimes you don't need to play academic basketball, but show the character my team had today to win the game. In a situation like this, it is important that the team has been able to, little by little, get back in the game, knowing it can turn that situation around like they did today."

"First of all, congratulations to Zaragoza. I think they have a very good team and especially a very deep roster with a lot of experienced players. We knew that today was going to be a hard game for us, because Zaragoza is a good team and they know how to move the ball. We wanted to play very fast, fast break, and that was especially good in the first quarter; we ran excellent on the fast break and moved the ball well, but somehow in the next quarters we stopped running and I think it has something to do with us not getting as many defensive stops anymore. Zaragoza played better defense and rebounded better. It was also not the best day for us from outside. We had a lot of open shots, but we did not make them. If we made them it would have been a much closer game. Zaragoza moved the ball to their shooters and made the shots."

"Truth to be told, we did a good job. It took us a bit of time to get in the game, but we managed to reach the two goals we had - getting the win first, then the tie-break advantage. Our fans had a good time. They wanted to see a good game and saw it, without any kind of doubts. We have not qualified yet and want to reach as high as possible. We will go to Rome next week to try to mathematically make it to the second round."

"Zaragoza is a very good team, they play very well here at home. We know they haven’t lost a Eurocup game here in Zaragoza yet. They’re a complete team, they do everything well; they don’t have mnay holes in their roster. They spread the ball very well. They have eight-nine guys that can give you 10 points every game. We came in and fought really hard, I thought. We just didn’t make as many shots in the second half and they did. So I take my hat off to them. Its going to be very tough to advance now, I know that."
