Anderson, Shved keep Khimki undefeated

Khimki Moscow Region remained undefeated in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague this season by downing Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade 85-78 at Mytishchi Arena on Tuesday. Khimki improved to 3-0, while Zvezda dropped to 1-2. James Anderson led the winners with 24 points and Alexey Shved recorded 18 points and a EuroLeague career-high 9 assists. Stefan Markovic added 10 points and Malcolm Thomas pulled down 10 rebounds for Khimki. Milko Bjelica paced Zvezda with 15 points, James Feldeine added 14, Taylor Rochestie 13 and Mathias Lessort had 12 and 8 rebounds for Zvezda. The visitors got off to a strong start as Feldeine and Bjelica shined early to give the Zvezda a 20-28 lead after 10 minutes. Markovic and Anderson helped Khimki to regain the lead, but Nikola Radicevic gave Zvezda a 43-44 edge at the break. Shved, Anderson and Thomas Robinson took over after the break as Khimki built a 64-55 lead through three quarters and kept a safe margin throughout the fourth.

Feldeine and Rochestie combined for all the points in a 0-7 opening run that put Zvezda in charge. Anthony Gill stepped up with back-to-back dunks and Shved added a layup to make it 6-9. A second-chance layup by Thomas gave the hosts their first lead, 11-9, after an 11-2 run. Bjelica and Ognjen Dobric each struck from downtown to put Zvezda back ahead, 15-20. Shved hit a triple and Anderson added a layup, but Pero Antic and an unstoppable Feldeine boosted the visitors' lead to 20-28 after 10 minutes. A driving layup by Markovic and a three-pointer by Shved got Khimki within 25-28 early in the second quarter. Radicevic took over, feeding Lessort for a big slam and restoring a 25-33 Zvezda margin. Markovic and Jenkins each struck from beyond the arc as Khimki tied the game at 38-38. Free throws by Anderson and Markovic completed the hosts' comeback, 43-42, but Radicevic restored a Zvezda edge at halftime, 43-44.

Anderson and Shved each hit a triple in transition to give Khimki a 51-46 lead soon after the break with an 8-0 run. Khimki found a new go-to guy in Robinson, who had a layup and a big slam in a 9-0 run that made it a double-digit game, 60-48. Rochestie and Antic brought Zvezda a bit closer, 64-55, after 30 minutes. Back-to-back baskets by Nikola Jovanovic gave Zvezda hope, 64-59, early in the fourth quarter. It didn't last long, however, as Thomas rescued Khimki and a coast-to-coast dunk by Shved caused Zvezda to call timeout at 72-61. Lessort and an outstanding Radicevic got Zvezda within 78-74 with over two minutes left, but free throws by Anderson and a dunk by Robinson sealed the outcome down the stretch.

Both teams return to action on Thursday; Zvezda hosts Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv, while Khimki plays on the road against Olympiacos Piraeus.

"We talked in the locker room at halftime about our approach. We threw away 20 minutes in the first half, playing without patience, and we didn't stop anyone on defense. We needed to have a different approach, especially on defense. I think we managed to do this in the third quarter. We were much, much better on defense and found some good opportunities to score. Finally, we won easily, but as I said, our approach in the first 20 minutes was very bad for us. For me, it is not important [to play against Olympiacos on Thursday] because this was four years ago. I also played against Olympiacos with Barcelona last season, so whatever happens, happens. I am now focused on my team and we need to play much, much better if we want to win over there."
ALIMPIJEVIC, DUSAN
Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade
"Mostly, we were good in the first half, but played without concentration in the third quarter, maybe for five, six minutes, I don't know exactly. For this game, that is enough if you have Khimki against you. Maybe that was the key period for this game. Also, the second thing, which is very important in games like this, is concentration at shooting free throws and today we didn't have that. We have a much smaller budget than others, but showed we can play with everyone, especially when we play at home. Our chances are bigger at home, of course."

"We just gotta find the way to start the game better as we are a really good team. We were focused, but for some reason in the first three games we just started out slow. It’s fine now because we won, but the schedule is gonna be tougher and something we have to change. We came back with James and Alexey as usual; other guys found their role. We have to come out better. I’m fine; it doesn’t matter for me [to start the game]. Coach wanted to protect me from early fouls, taking myself out of the game. Emotionally I was able to focus on what I need to do to help the team. I’m pretty sure that going to Belgrade will be a different story for me because playing in front of their fans will be more difficult. But tonight it was a normal game."
MARKOVIC, STEFAN
Khimki Moscow Region
"Like we said before the game in the preview, they came here to fight, of course. They are tough opponent and fight till the end. And we knew that. We didn’t start well defensively as they had open shots and made too easy baskets, using their moments. In the third quarter we started with a good run and showed our quality defensively. We showed we are a much better team. We didn’t start well defensively and when you allow somebody to get confidence, you’ll have a tough night. This is the EuroLeague where all the players have quality. We are 3-0 in the EuroLeague and we wanted that to defend our home court. Now we have road games and they will be tougher."
SHVED, ALEXEY
Khimki Moscow Region
"Like all Serbian teams, Zvezda played hard and physical. They showed us today they can play well and there are no easy teams in the EuroLeague. We just played hard today until the end, stayed together all night and this is why we won. We just played three games and have a lot more after that. We played three home games, so we will see how we play on the road in the next two. We can't speak about the playoffs at the beginning of the season."
