Brown, Lokomotiv cruise in Eurocup return

2013 Eurocup winners Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar returned to the competition with an impressive start by beating Stelmet Zielona Gora 78-97 on the road. A 0-14 run midway through the first quarter gave the guests a 10-28 margin and they never looked back. Derrick Brown led the winners with 23 points on 9-of-11 two-point shooting, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Krunoslav Simon and Anthony Randolph added 15 points apiece, Nikita Kurbanov scored 12 and Richard Hendrix 10. Quinton Hosley scored 14 for Zielona Gora, Steven Burtt Jr. netted 13, Lukasz Koszarek 12 and Daniel Johnson and Aaron Cel 11 each.

Randolph and Brown highlighted a 0-14 run with 5 points, after Quinton Hosley scored from the foul line cut the margin to 10-14. The charge gave the visitors a 10-28 margin, which they increased to 12-31 late in the quarter on a three-pointer by Simon. The home team tried to react through Chevon Troutman to get within 19-35. Lokomotiv fueled by a huge performance from Brown extended the difference to 29-51 as the first half finished.

Brown scored a layup to make it 31-58 early in the third quarter before Hosley dunked the ball trying to excite the crowd, but the visitors remained unstoppable and Aaron Miles fixed the score at 53-76 at the end of the third quarter. Lukasz Koszarek from downtown cut the difference to less than 20 points, 59-78, but little changed till the final buzzer.

"It's been a long time since I've seen a team as motivated as Lokomotiv tonight. The contest actually ended in the first quarter when we went into a 17-point hole. We were knocked-out and we could never bite back the rest of the way. We hit the wall tonight facing their athleticism. When you got a taller player on almost every single position and when you're down early, it's always tough to execute, to make decisions. We tried to do our best but tonight it just wasn't enough for Krasnodar."

"We are delighted to win the first Eurocup game, especially on the road. Zielona Gora has a good team with a certain flair. We played good from the start, and made a big difference due to our defense. But I am not satisfied that in the second half, we allowed ourselves to be a little lazy, and eventually rival scored 20 points more than in the first half. You can prevent all sorts of errors, but you can not be lazy."
